The C type conversions I know of seem quite trivial. Can you give an example of something non-trivial? And I don't mean something like the float f = some_integer / some_other_integer trap, those should be obvious.

Apple's 'Numbers' is actually quite good for most use cases, it's quite a bit more elegant as Excel anyway. The problem with Apple is their lack of experience in business support and their shortcomings in Q&A in the mac department latel

Courier looked extremely promising and I'm saying that as an OSX,iPhone,iPad user. How they could kill that thing off still blows my mind. Then again we have only ever seen an interface mockup, haven't we? Maybe the software / device they h

Exactly. It's probably not even that common for biology groups to have a programmer doing work for them, so they don't often get that chance. That's why we need more interdisciplinary research groups / teams.

Did you share your solution? Imagine them reapplying your method to some testcases, yielding the same results for days of work within minutes.

"let the compiler work its magic." if you want that, use a higher level language. One of the foundations of C is that there is as little implicit behavior as possible. I'd hate to be left in the dark whether my . will now result in a point

Thinking about it, OPs concept may have potential for a game. Something in the style of Introversion's "Darwinia" (I highly recommend it btw.), but with first person gameplay. The linked video could perfectly serve as an intro to the game.

If she wouldn't have had the backup in her house, couldn't you have simply restored the files from the original disks? Of course you would have to rebuild the folder structure somehow, but that would be the work of some days, not months, ri

Yep, about that XCode installation: They screwed up when they first made it MacAppstore-only. It has become much better now, it can also update through the appstore without redownloading the whole multiple GB package. The whole Lion softwar

Being currently involved in GPGPU research, these descriptions remind me of the state we are in for GPGPU computing. CUDA, OpenCL and now OpenACC have been steps towards a higher-level abstraction of stream computing and every time a new fr

As an iOS user from Europe I seriously hope they will do the transition gradually - e.g. first migrate only the US users, then country after country like they do with new iTunes content for example.

I know. That sentence was of course sarcastic ;). It's a shame too, because a lot of their media has that special charm and its artistic value is sometimes quite high IMO (especially in the anime department).

How about you need your people to make an iOS 4.x compatible app. Oops, suddenly they need Objective C including all its memory management nasties. This is going to be so much harder if you have never seen pure C.

Beat me to this but I like the objective C approach: You can save lots of specialized classes by extending existing ones with categories. And instead of a rigid class structure you usually check the availability of properties at runtime. It

I see your point now. Yes, I can see Python 3's syntax facilitate some of that work. I still think you will need branches and/or polymorphisms to do more complex localizations, especially when you need to support east asian languages.

Do you really want to keep the same format strings when localizing an application? Isn't it much cleaner to just define multiple format strings? Translations in general don't work that way, you can't just move around words and translate the
