But literally no one in this thread is saying otherwise. We’re just saying online friends are real and shouldn’t be demeaned with scare quotes, and also you’re probably missing out if your only interactions are local.

But nor does what you said really answer my question. Online friends are real, and often provide things that local friends can't. No one here is saying they're a substitute for local friends, but that doesn't mean these rel

When I was a teenager, I had local friends and online friends, and my online friends were very real and I'm very thankful that I had them. Neither were a replacement for the other.

Why the scare quotes around online friends? Online friends are very real friends.

Is it unethical to hurt someone if you're doing it in a way that they definitely won't be able to remember later? Assuming humans remain mortal, all pain definitely won't be remembered sufficiently later.

Circumcisions are "most all" surgeries on infants (in the US), since they are sadly done routinely on something like a quarter of them (half of anatomic boys).

This post is not really about robot vacuums and laundry racks, but about how simple ideas can elude human beings for long stretches of time, and then in retrospect look obvious.

A strong foundation in linear algebra, multivariable calculus, probability, and statistics is going to be generally applicable almost no matter what problem you work on.

If you want a beautiful abstract perspective on linear algebra to complement Strang's more down-to-earth, matrix- and linear equation-oriented lectures, pick up Axler's Linear Algebra Done Right .

With over-parameterized neural networks, the problem essentially becomes convex and even linear [1], and in many contexts provably converges to a global minimum [2], [3]. The question then becomes: why does this generalize [4], given that t

A lot of people can't subitize past four. Counting is another matter: it's a symbolic, deliberate, step-by-step activity. Arguably most neural networks don't do symbolic, step-by-step reasoning "natively", and maybe

On this general topic, I recently learned that the words undulate and water have the same origin in Proto-Indo-European: wódr̥ (PIE) → udōr (Proto-Italic) → unda (Latin) → undulātus (Late Latin) → undulate (English) wódr̥ (PIE) → watōr
