Hacker News doesn't do anything nearly database intensive enough for it to matter much. I would suggest defaulting to PostgreSQL for all database needs unless you have a specific reason to use something else. It is well supported on mo

If you're relying the extra protection of an exact match over a match with a Levenshtein distance of 1, your security question isn't secure to begin with. Proper management of security questions is pretty straightforward: Set them

There's a contact link in the footer to send an email to hn@ycombinator.com In my experience, 'dang reads those emails personally and responds promptly.

There's a search box at the bottom of the page. Also, anything you upvote goes in your saved stories on your profile. Was it this? https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=11627955

Right. People are more than happy to use free, open source, standardized, distributed, self-owned software and services... when that software and those services offer the best solution for their needs. There's only so much ease of use

Obviously it would be better in the long-term, global perspective for no one to pay. If no one paid, no one would continue making ransomware. But that requires that the everyone hit by ransomware before people give up on making it be willin

Maybe this is just pointless pedantry but... This isn't a software upgrade. It's an on/off switch. There's a difference. A software upgrade implies some new code which cost real money to develop is being made available.

This is a relevant question to ask. This stuff is hard and it takes a lot of oversight to make it work. But that doesn't mean that we should assume every charity is producing negative consequences which outweigh the good they do. That

You can use its own output against it. (Which means, ironically, it does not follow "know thyself", a maxim said to be from the Oracle at Delphi.) Fixate on a number fairly late in the sequence (the millionths place seems to work

No, people don't like solutions which ignore the problem. Yes, by completely changing your plan for your life you can prevent certain problems, but that doesn't necessitate that you should make the change.

It seems a bit ambitious to call this true random without any analysis of randomness quality or predictability. I find it very unlikely this will be shown to be better than existing RNG solutions. It's clever, but clever in the way tha

Just in case it's not clear, you're getting downvotes because you are making an ad hominem argument rather than a logical rebuttal of the previous post. "Organization X is wrong about A, therefore they are wrong about B,"

The most popular talking vehicle, in the US at least, is named Thomas. This isn't a particularly convincing argument for a silly name. If kids will accept Thomas, surely they'll accept a more serious name than Boaty McBoatface.
