In my opinion, might be worthy of a meta rule: If the only result of a post is to discuss the value or general opinion of a particular public person, it is, by definition, not a post we would like in our conversation.

I find that hilarious because I actually feel the opposite way. We have ignored the impact of what we do far, far too long. Forums like this facilitate this false dichotomy. Society IS tech. To believe otherwise is stupid. But I have found

Long time HN-er I'm flagging this. It's not because I give a hoot about sama but because this kind of crap is posted only to lead to endless discussion. Get to work. Focus. Whatever the hell Sam is can wait for another day.

Humans do this every now and then. We seem to suffer through it somehow. Most of history consists of a large-scale epistemological battle. We used to think the Roman Emperor (or equivalent) was the sole source of truth and understanding. Th

I remain fascinated by UFOs/UAPs. I have been this way since I was a child, although I went from "I want to believe" to "This is an example of people being stupid" and finally my current position. UAPs are intermitt

I don't want to write an essay for an answer. I wish the author the best of luck in realizing their error. I used to feel the same way. I wrote and blogged about it, then did a bunch of research. I feel that this journey of ideas I too

I loved this when he posted it. Taking this a step further, and being facetious, I'm thinking of starting my own network! It's all me, all the time. Sometimes I'll be a nature show, sometimes I'll be in a spy movie, some

This essay is a mess. I won't flag it, but I doubt with such poor definitions it'll make much of a useful conversation on HN. I counted four topics in the first few paragraphs that the author defined in a poor, self-serving way. A

I am moving from the tech world into long form fiction, so I find the intersection of fiction and comments from folks on HN interesting. Definitions matter. To me, art is emotional impact over time. Good art can impact you emotionally from

I've been using a phrase for several years, "profound ignorance". I might use "humble abductions." Thanks. We always end up back with cluster/cohort analysis, then definitions. I think a big part of the problem

You're not wrong, but I think you may have headed out the wrong way from your conclusion. Reproducibility trumps causal models. If you call the psychic hotline and get the same results time-after-time, then keep using the psychic hotli

This is an odd argument. The net is currently broken in many ways. One of the many ways is fake negative reviews. They easily destroy small businesses. As I understand your argument, because the net has solid endpoints we can identify and i

It's interesting to me that most of the push-back so far has been for the business model of the internet, ie people need link traversal and content publishing in order to make money from advertising (implied, but not stated). Therefore

Why don't we just require major providers to provide a realtime list of IPs that are attacking so that we can drop them in a block list with an expiration date of a month or so. If your computer is infected, I don't want to talk t

I agree, but keep in mind that the goal of AI (whatever that is) all along is not explanatory power, it's verisimilitude. This is due to necessity, since we don't understand it already, the only way to judge it is to see if it kin

I generally agree. As I learn more, I realize how much we teach kids younger in their lives is oversimplified, bowlderized BS, no matter the topic. I think that's unavoidable. You have to learn some comic book version of, say, physics

This is ridiculous for a lot of reasons. I'll try to just point out the top one or two in the interest of brevity. 1. Predicting the long-term future is a bizarre and fruitless game. One might even say idiotic. If you're a prepper
