Typically, incompressible flow is valid in gases for Mach numbers less than 0.3, so this is relevant for automotive aerodynamics and wind turbines, but not for turboprops, jet engines, compressors, gas turbines, and most airplanes. It may b

What about borrowing the popular 'like' feature from Friendfeed? After a comment, it lists people that liked something, but it cuts it off at a certain point so it's not overwhelming. Perhaps one could sort the prominence of likes by how re

It seems to me that for backup you'd want a file format with redundancy, or that could tolerate a few bit for sector error while remaining mostly readable. This seems to conflict with most compression schemes.

Our business model couldn't be much simpler: build machines that save people and utilities energy and money, sell them at a profit. But it's still tough raising money.

That might be true in the general population, but I'm hoping that at least in the scientist or the hacker population this effect is mitigated...

This drives everyone else crazy, except when I am doing it on the New York Times website, in which case it tries to define all these words for me, which drives me crazy...

Instead of suggesting that they find ways to adapt marriage and family life for career oriented women, they suggest simply, on the basis of statistics, that those women with a shot and mind for independence simply be avoided. How's that for

Yeah, actually; that cycle give a pretty nice boost. That would save a lot of energy for a home system. It also works in energy storage -- you usually store energy in the dead of night, when it's cooler, and expand mid-day. It's even possib

I can't comment on their technical plan, but they're definitely on thin ice as a business. Six months is not a lot of runway, and the enthusiasm for funding luxury vehicles is not high right now: Tesla ran into this problem. Additionally, t

No one lives in a persistent fight. But for those that do experience conflict, I don't see how those who needn't sustain their identity in the face of adversity fare much worse than others.

Well, certainly in the case of the devout religious, there is a firm set of rules and values to which one is supposed to adhere. It may demand effort from you, but not so much of introspection and self-examination, which is often frightenin

One trouble with following this line of reasoning to its limits is simply that one doesn't have an endless supply of mental energy. It is not merely easier to mark something about yourself as known and solid, and move on; it also frees cycl

Buddhist practitioners are human too, of course, but a central practice in Buddhism is to dissolve and refute concrete belief in a persistent self and consciousness.

No, I don't think it's always been the case, though you're definitely right that we've advanced beyond the 1300s here. I think that, quite generally, there are periods in which the art, on it own merit, breaks through and speaks to a broade

I suggest you read the book "What is Intelligence?" by James Flynn himself. It's a cautious and erudite work, and the theory they float does seem to resolve quite a few of the mysteries. Perhaps most importantly, the data do not bear out un

I know less about popular music of a century ago. But in literature, at least, the market for fiction has shrunk enormously, and most people no longer read anything so challenging as they used to. Worse, the market for challenging videogam

I consider the silence of the Copenhagen interpretation over what happens during measurement to be an actual difference of physics, not of interpretation. If some other theory were able to predict, say, the time it takes for a wave function
