You can use the mkdocstrings plugin with mkdocs which will generate api docs from your functions and classes and their docstrings just like Sphinx does. It even supports inv files just like Sphinx so you can reference third party libraries

I think you're confusing installing the compiled package and using it (which doesn't require anything else) with _compiling_ the package, which requires XCode on MacOS

Imports from 3rd party packages are always absolute. That's why I prefer imports from first party packages to be absolute as well
