I had a huge row with my prospective US investment banking client manager because we had a conversation that went something like "we'll pay you for 8 hours but we expect you to work 10" (or 12). I said, why lie immdiately in

Almost definitionally most of the ads would be shown to visitors thought to be bots, which might not impress advertisers, even if G was careful to only count those that passed the CAPTCHAs (though the LLM bots can too, it seems). There is a

I use the 'open Web' on my phone and basically no apps (I side-load some for testing): I don't even have a sign-in for the apps store. And we had worse walled gardens before - I created an early ISP in the UK to help get peo

No, one does NOT need to just accept that doomer view. And one can work against the bad stuff and for good stuff on the Net. I have been doing so since the late 80s since before most of the current shiny existed. I ran an ISP in the 90s.

The 100kloc thing had no malloc/free, ie most significant persistent data objects were static, and the inlining with LTO (and some help) was pretty intense, so the stack was used, but not as much as it seemed on the surface. We did (r

BTW you can get very close to the metal in Java too if you are so inclined - I was part of a team doing high-speed trading with microseconds timing and minimal GC in Java. A very few 'unsafe' lines made that possible (but also th

I created a little CSS-pulsing 'live' button and give it a fixed number of cycles of pulsing to cap worst-case resource consumption. But it took me a while to work out that that was the right thing to do!

It's basically the only way I've ever worked, and clients (eg in investment banking) kept hiring me! Trunk/main should always be just about prod-ready; take staging/prod branches to prove that and do any final tweaks.
