1) Notice that Google has removed this app too. 2) Carriers (AT&T) are known for disabling app sideloading. 3) Having to root your device presents the basic user with a major technical hurdle, and in some cases, an outright impossibilit

You certainly can compile iOS apps, with full access to Objective-C and Cocoa, on Linux. The platform does not make a lick of difference when you bring a cross-compiler into the mix. That is somewhat like saying that OS X being written in O

I don't think it is quite fair to call Xcode crashes an Objective-C wart. It has nigh-unto absolutely nothing to do with the language, and you can of course execute the compiler directly. I'd be interested to know what other things you cons

How about Bluetooth on the second generation iPod touch? That's a prime example of "chipset supported this, Apple locked it out with software and unlocked it with an update."

I feel like this is an overengineered solution by somebody who is not quite familiar with what the platform has to offer. 1) UIImage already handles choice based on asset name. Apple could use the same asset choice logic server-side for eac

Absence of test cases? Surely this is not a function of the license in use, correct? There can be shitty BSD-licensed swill with no test cases just as easily as there can be that as GPLv3.

I'll admit that I was expecting a site more like http://hasthelhcdestroyedtheearth.com . It's really nice to see that Mozilla is still taking this stuff into consideration. After all, memory has been a point of contention in the community

I don't have anything against Balsamiq or their product (nor do I know what it is,) but why are we lauding a company for doing what any human with some basic modicum of morals would do? We forget that companies are staffed by human beings,

The only real downsides I can find are that: 1) You need to design the selected/deselected states for buttons separately and merge the code. 2) It'll give you drawing code, but you have to maintain those chunks of code directly in your sour

If you boil down a UI element's description to a set of lines, colours and gradients, you can easily apply that to other elements at all scale factors, without having to ship piles of images (possibly in four different sizes, if you have iP

Wait, what does it matter that they were bootstrapped? The title could just as well be "startup that took investments and venture capital saved boatloads of money ...". The fact that they paid out-of-pocket seems immaterial to the article?

The "CRC-32 is slow" sentiment feels like a bit of a straw-man argument against gzip. With today's computing power, the difference is nigh-unto negligible: checksumming is dwarfed by the actual decompression, or maybe even the network overh

This is immaterial to the "use keys" suggestion. I realize that you mentioned the key+password case, but I can't help but think that the solution to that is simply to go with a key without a password, limit the account on the other end as m

Honestly, I wouldn't work for Apple either. I'd hate to give up the community I've spent most of my programming life a part of - the jailbreaking community. It'd take more than a giant salary to rewrite my values. :P

Not working for Apple is possibly the best decision Linus could have made. One can argue that Linux would have kept moving forward without him, but it's really a shame when great talent leaves the open-source community. The man might be opi

This bug is sort of funny (in the frustrating way) when you're looking for high-resolution wallpapers for the iPad - At least on InterfaceLIFT on-device, you get a 1024x1024 image when trying to fetch the iPad3,x version.

The only caveat is that you then have to wrap it in an #ifdef if you want source portability. The thing random() has over arc4random() is exactly that - it's part of the standard C library on most platforms. For discussion: Why is random()
