What physical attributes make a smart fridge not a general purpose computer? Or a car’s infotainment system? Or a Bluray disc player?

But those are gaming and entertainment devices, not general-purpose computing devices that everyone relies on for day-to-day work and life. A good way to think about it is this: if Windows was as closed down as iOS, and took a 30% cut on ev

ErsatzTV is amazing. It’s actually excellent for settings up kids channels. You can configure start and end times and select a pool of content/shows/movies to pick from. One nifty feature is that you can configure “filler” content

Reading about it is a one-time thing. Once your config is setup, the single command takes less than 5 minutes to run. Of course, if what you already have works and/or you aren’t using NixOS in the first place, this probably is not the

nixos-anywhere is a tool that allows you to do something similar (?) to install NixOS in-place on a remote machine (using kexec “magic” under the hood). https://github.com/nix-community/nixos-anywhere I tried it on a H

Awesome work! As always, there is an opportunity to “extend” this down/up a few layers :) Also, are you Algerian by any chance? I am Tunisian - it’s always nice to see North Africans (and Africans in general) on HN!

But then you need to deal with the complexity and maintenance involved in using a private tracker. Easier to pay for a provider or two and an indexer and be done with it. Of course, private trackers are superior when it comes to older conte

The best WEB-DL groups are internal P2P - FLUX (HDB) and NTb (BTN). They both (afaik) do hybrid releases by taking e.g. audio or DV metadata from one service and merging it with another source. Funnily enough, even for UHD remuxes, P2P grou

Oh we are going to have disagree on that last point: I can name multiple anime of the same caliber from just the last few seasons alone :) On the contrary, I think we are getting more quality anime per season than ever before.

In Rust, unit tests are marked using the #[test] attribute and typically live alongside the code under test. Integration tests live under a top-level “tests” folder - in this case, you’ll see that the “tests” directory contains test that ca

It’s a fun game that has: tight mechanics, a high skill ceiling, an openness to harmless “trolling” at some level, a somewhat cartoony art style (so doesn’t look too dated), and a surprisingly active community. Honestly, there is no online

Agreed. The law either applies to everyone, or to no one. There is no in-between. I watched a show and read a few books that dived a bit into how the FBI’s counterterrorism unit ran their interrogations. Sounded like their techniques led to

Why not both? You’ll need to run a server either way. HA can export data to Prometheus. Setting up and running HA is much easier than figuring out how to get a set of different smart devices to export metrics to Prometheus/Influx. Let
