Derp, you're right - it was finding an OpenSSL binary that MacPorts installed. Explicitly doing `/usr/bin/openssl version` shows `LibreSSL 2.8.3`.

I'm guessing you're on macOS 13? The machine I'm on now is still on 12.6 (`Darwin Kernel Version 21.6.0`), and `openssl version` reports `OpenSSL 3.0.6`. Glad to see it if they made the switch in the new release, though.

Some third-party fediverse hosts allow you to point your own custom (sub)domain at the instance they operate for you; you can also just set up your own instance. Not sure what Let's Encrypt would have to do with this, though.

I think you might be conflating the activity of instance admins that run Mastodon with the actual developers of Mastodon, which isn't fair. Similarly, the developers of Chrome shouldn't be held responsible if people use Chrome to

I don't see why this is a tragedy. Yes, broadly speaking, instead of a single fediverse, there is a "free speech" fediverse and a "safe space" fediverse with little federation between them. But if the people on the

There are many different Fediverse apps you can try; you don't have to stick with the official Mastodon one. But I personally just use the web interface of my instance myself, the rare times I view it on mobile.

I don't have an answer for that since I'm not an expert with the protocol and I've really only used the microblogging/"Twitter-like" aspect of it. But at least in terms of that, the front ends are compatible wi

Discord and other Electron-based chat software provide very little practical improvement over IRC for the purpose of discussion while requiring 10-100x the resources.

The most important note of this release is that Zig is now self-hosted; it is capable of compiling itself. I've been learning Zig as a side project for a couple months now. It's been kind of hard since I don't have a lot of e

Try the article reader mode in most browsers first. A lot of these things keep the page content in the DOM, but just add garbage on top of it to make it difficult to read. In cases where content has been actually removed from the page, view

I'm not an expert on the details of the protocol, so I can't give you a good answer to that. I believe it's just a matter of Mastodon not accepting messages that it knows it won't be able to display correctly. But other

Think of Fediverse as akin to the email system, where there are thousands if not millions of different servers out there hosting email and exchanging them to each other. Now consider Mastodon as an email client which is hosted on a web site
