I feel really sorry for the developer. I've only been a casual observer, but from my view point the community's reaction was... not great, to put it lightly. I get that a lot of us are tired of 'AI' being shoved down our

I am not surprised. This worked out fairly well for them in the past. While I dislike this personally - I'd rather have competing chips on the best node - I don't think this violates any moral principles. I do wonder if there is a

That is certainly the case, but seems to be perfectly legal. This scheme is implemented by a number of companies, but most charge only €2/mo or so.

You actually can pay Meta €9.99/month for ad-free Facebook+Instagram in the EU. I would hope this also causes them to track and use much less PII, but I couldn't find anything substantiating that.

As someone who has used react-router before and is currently evaluating Remix for a different project, I didn't realize just how thin that layer has become. I suppose there's a ton of features in react-router I never touched. From

The same project has an application called Gum which exposes primitives from their UI framework via a single CLI binary. It's intended to be used from a normal bash script and I've found it really quite pleasant to use. For exampl

I have also ended up with Home-Manager. It's an extremely powerful tool that I am unlikely to replace in the next ten or so years, but you also need to learn a whole programming language (Nix) plus a DSL (the NixOS module system) to ge

Not just EU companies. Also EU customers. I cannot use my cards in a Card-Not-Present transaction that does not support 3D Secure. This obviously isn't a concern for them yet since they only ship to the US, but it might become one. In

The problem is that in a sense it is just some random Qt/Gtk window. I have recently written my own PolKit agent. It runs purely in userspace without any special privileges. An attacker could kill your legitimate PolKit agent, regist

I'd argue ISO 8601 (YYYY-MM-DD) is superior still because it is much more difficult to confuse for etiher DD/MM/YYYY or MM/DD/YYYY.

This isn't wrong, but somewhat orthogonal. Yes, I "published" it on our package registry, but it wasn't public. Access was still scoped to the team developing the application I was speaking about.

There are real, tangible benefits to monorepos. And real, tangible downsides, too. Like everything else, it's a tradeoff. I'm sure people advocating for them have brought up some benefits. But in case they haven't, here'

It depends. If the dependency is in nixpkgs (Nix' own package repository), someone will have done the work of figuring out the dependencies properly and you can just use that. If it's not, you can either do that yourself and pin p

This is not true. Nix actually solves the problem. If you package with Nix, you'll get the exact same version of Python with the exact same version of dependencies, including the exact same version of system libraries. Your build will

Lots of what the article talks about pertains to the difference between a 'full DE' and 'just a WM'. Gnome and KDE fall in the first category. They have a notification system, lockscreens, app launcher, etc by default. H

Let me start by saying this looks like a fun project to work on and, honestly, that's reason enough for doing it. As a solution to the problem of app distribution, I do have some concerns, though: How do you deal with resource sharing?
