I don't think the student was playing chicken here. She probably wanted to attend the class she paid to attend subject to the policies she agreed to when she enrolled, pass her exams, and get an A.

I experience this as well. I try to balance the good with the bad, but any talk at all of life's struggles is just "too much negativity" for many people.

Documentation via dropping by someone's desk is much better than no documentation at all, which is what I have observed the effect of WFH to be (perhaps this isn't typical though). Is it really so bad having small talk with cowork

This is so irritating. It's like nobody does actual work on computers anymore so UI changes which break muscle/visual memory (and consequently "flow") focus group well.
