IIRC, the main objection was that error handling was an all or nothing affair. Whereas most HTML on the web is (or was) broken to a greater or lesser degree. There was also the objection that stricter parsing made it harder for hobbyists. I

I still maintain that the "living standard" is an oxymoron. It's a collaborative browser dev document. Don't get me wrong, that's great. However for everyone else an unversioned document, any part of which can chang

For most of the article the author seems to be discussing non-professional programmers rather than non-programmers. Or perhaps using the two interchangeably? There is certainly a need for non-professional programmers to be able to program (

Indeed. Although technically it's UCS-2 as the low level stuff doesn't understand modern unicode; it just treats it all as a stream of wide chars. It's up to applications to interpret it. According to this[0] the path limit i

As I recall at least some parts of the WinAPI had trouble if you used long paths (via "\\?\") and forward slash. I don't know if that's still true.

It should be noted that Windows can use either forward or backward slashes nowadays. In fact, even File Explorer allows you to use an unholy mix of the two.

I find the staging area useful. It especially helps when you only want to commit a change in part of a file or just generally reviewing a commit before it's a real commit. And also to double check I'm not going to be uploading any

It's a good example but the difference doesn't quite have to be as dramatic as the article makes out. Screenshot tools rarely produce optimised PNGs. A quick test of the image in the article shows that optipng (lossless) can bring

Many "observers" claimed that fleeing to the UK was a nonsensical move if he feared the US. Sweden would have been much safer.

That's been deprecated as well. The current docs say you should do this spec = importlib.util.spec_from_file_location(module_name, file_path) module = importlib.util.module_from_spec(spec) spec.loader.exec_module(module)

The reason asbestos is banned is because it was used and did cause real harms (and even today it's still occasionally found in old buildings). Sure it didn't decimate the UK population but that's a very low bar to step over.

And from the article it sounds like the US is reluctant to blacklist anything even when there are known harms. As someone from the UK, it surprised me to read that even asbestos is allowed.

This is starting to sound a lot like the discussions around optimizing C compilers. Only in that case you can drop into assembly if necessary.

Isn't there some irony in fact that SQL was meant to abstract away the "how" of getting records? If you need to optimize through implementation specific quirks, then wouldn't a more direct api be preferable?

My only concern is that Google is big enough to force through changes in the standards too. Chrome+Search is so dominant it's able to steamroll objections pretty effectively through sheer momentum.

VScode and PyCharm recognise variables in f-strings correctly. I'm not sure how "%s" is more pure than "{name}". They are both variables, only in the case of "%s" you add a level of indirection.
