Well, yes, once you accept that they are your inferiors you might even feel good about giving them a little charity. As a European, having to get into that frame of mind is probably the worst part about America's tipping culture.

The main problem is that there is nowhere else to go in the Bay Area if you're a young programmer. You cannot live in the Silicon Valley suburbs unless you have a wife, two children, a dog and a Prius, and it takes time and opportunity

Mozilla was founded to protect open standards on the web against the threat posed by private actors. But, as people keep arguing, we should only be concerned about interference from the state . Since the state is not threatening Brendan

I am aware that it has been considered as a research issue, but I was talking about political discourse.

The subtitle is more memorable: "For the Record - and The Tragedy of Mozilla". That was definitely a better article than this one. I'd say that the flagging over the past few days has had a negative effect on HN's rankin

Those graphs look hideous. The wobbles are too big, and too regular. Compare with an actual xkcd graph: https://xkcd.com/1306/

Guys, this is serious. .org is for non-profit organizations. .com is for commercial purposes. This is why moot had to beg for donations for years while helplessly watching everyone and their cat monetize "his" "content"

Speaking of stigma keeping people from seeking treatment, how does this interplay with the fact that most people in America get health insurance through their jobs? Aren't people afraid that some information will leak out if they seek

I'd like to urge everyone to consider whether it's a good idea to comment on this story. If you voice an opinion in support of Eich, obviously that's going to be a liability in the future. But voicing an opinion against him i

When I said that it was silly to simply donate money to a commercial venture without gaining any stake in it, they called me a naysayer. Who's saying nay now?

It's just some fringe movement organizing an online petition. Almost nobody in Italy had even heard of it until the foreign press (apparently the Telegraph from the UK) started spreading the "news".

I think we're trying to optimize different functions. For Bowser, I think hq4x is fine (the mouth needs not have a smooth contour like a human's - compare with a dinosaur or a crocodile), but you are giving more weight to the fact

No, hq4x is still better on almost all of them. Microsoft's makes everything too round and blobby. It pretty much only works really well when everything is round, like in Boo. But look at what it does to the Golden Axe characters'

I thought it was a problem that 50%* of college freshmen read below a 10th grade level, but apparently the problem was with college graduates writing above it. (*: number made up because I can't be bothered to look it up.)

Google Maps's killer feature for me is public transit information. It would be nice if there were an open public transit schedule database that interfaced with OSM.

A capital idea, my friend! But I'll do you one better: why not just wrap up the entire program inside a function called "main"? Clearly that would make all syntax discussions moot, now and forever.
