There’s at least two ways you could keep the Emacs ecosystem while refreshing some of the other pieces (to build a new editor): - You could reimplement the Emacs LISP VM and change what some of the native editor types refer to (buffer, poin

You need exceedingly accurate timing and transmission to do computational inference with multiple telescopes. Even minuscule errors will wreck the entire effort. It is very, very hard even with only three telescopes on earth, nevermind a hu

NFL theorems aren’t an argument about noise, they’re an argument about the uncountability of real numbers. NFL states that over all problems any optimization method performs equally poorly to any other, or equivalently, _that if an optimiza

Do people not create partitions any more? I thought this was sysadmin 101 for, like, forever. Databases, web servers, etc. should never ever fill up the entire disk. Separate partitions for boot, swap, /, /home, /var, and &#x

I mean, generally speaking you can’t get fired for printing your own emails.

Everyone is assuming it’s email, but you don’t need “a script” to search your own email, and you don’t need to risk getting fired sending emails to your lawyer, you just print them out. Or wait to get fired and get them during discovery. Go

I’m curious why there needs to be a script involved and feel like we are missing a big part of the story here. You don’t need “a script” to search your email. And you don’t need to take the risk to “exfiltrate documents” if it’s just emails

If you worked in this field you would know how ridiculous your claims are. Dr Gebru wasn’t trying to stave off the robot apocalypse, she was interrogating biases exhibited by some neural networks due to the data they are trained on and how

It doesn’t matter if it’s her lawyer. Any lawyer would have told her not to do this because it damages her case, and the emails are discoverable anyway in pretrial. Also, I have to ask, why didn’t she just print them? Or take screen pics wi

It’s insane for gamers, but cheap for machine learning. $1500 for that speed and more importantly 24GB vram? Yes please.

Depends on the field. For example, practically all of machine learning and related fields are $0 to publish and are open access by default. It’s been a huge boon for everyone except I guess traditional publishers.

I disagree. It’s not about getting the data where it needs to be. It’s about data version control at a very fine level with very large datasets (in a way that is efficient). It’s about detecting changes in model results base don changes in
