Despite my somewhat crippled ability to think RPN, I love the simplicity and expressiveness of the above.

Ah, interesting, I wish the title had been prefixed with "What if ". There's a language where THEN basically means ENDIF... Forth, if memory serves me right?

Yes, it was indeed implemented at OS-level, you could point at the assigned name/alias from, say, a paint program and find the files/dirs you'd expect to see. Changes to files/dirs too worked as expected as far as I can

No direct experience with union mounts (I'm on Mac) but it sounds like those would do the trick.

Yes, for things like PATH. But ASSIGN did more, you could essentially create a "device" (combining all ADD'ed things) that could be transparently accessed as such by other programs. It worked like a version of the Windows SU

Interesting. It seems to me that a lot of effort if being put into figuring out how far "as if" can take us, rather than doing better than "as if".

Shame. I have installed Linux Mint on my MB Air and it does works quite well. It boots very quickly and even fails to come back from sleep no less infrequently than High Sierra itself.

Not a Microsoft fan, but simple C / Windows API code from 25 years ago would likely compile and run on Windows 10 unchanged. My limited experience with Swift suggests that even 25 hours ago could be a tall order...

This is so interesting and so difficult. Van Vogt wrote about the cortical-thalamic pause in Null-A (1948), you could almost read this as vindication of Korzybzki and Van Vogt.

I liked Tanenbaum's book but I think I understand what you mean with theory vs application. Back when I was working on my toy OS I also bought the book describing the implementation of an OS called MMURTL, apparently the book and the c

Great find! Another interesting and rather different take on Finnegan's Wake is Terence McKenna's FW talk : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CdXBulkqH5s , worth listening to.

Nice. Reads like a follow-up to Stroustrup's 'The design and evolution of C++' and perhaps a good 'what's been new in C++' /low down for anybody looking to pick up the language again.

Nice one. I certainly remember doing more thinking before starting to code, sketching things out on paper&post-it's. No gisting or stackoverflowing things into an editor just to see if they compile! Never had to deal with punchcard

Yes, jimage is relatively new but this is more about the way the ransomware attempts to evade detection. The way it gets in, according to the Blackberry article, is through vulnerable, internet-facing (or anyway, hostile-facing) RDP server

Interesting! Could sufficiently enhanced compile-time reflection (say we do get supercharged CT reflection in C++2b*) be used to implement fully transparent&automatic versioning in serialization frameworks? I know very little on this s
