I agree with this objection. If I use my land for a business, it stresses the government more than if I live on my land. My customers need a place to park (my neighborhood has on-street parking), the local housing crunch is made worse becau

Nobody's saying this is an impossible problem. The paper shows how much additional work is required beyond a traditional data science workflow. The team behind the paper built a model that had good performance on training data. They&#x

Instead, publishers seem increasingly interested in native ads and referral links since you can't block them.

Yes! I run a data science department that's involved with digital advertising. We have client files that are restricted and regularly destroyed. Sometimes I wonder how many competitors use those files to build better ad targeting syste

Exactly, the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) says you have a right to ask a company that claims you owe it money to prove it.

I'm currently working on a batch of information requests about myself to different data brokers and alternative credit reporting firms. I send a copy of my drivers license and a recent utility bill and they send me my records for free.

Came to this thread hoping to find a shoutout to 2600. Am not disappointed. 2600 in its heyday was a beautiful hodgepodge of technoanarchy that was a balm to my teenage soul.

I made it through all three books and really enjoyed them (especially book 2). But I have to admit that I don't know how to feel about the ending. Definitely not the ending I anticipated.

That's true to a point. Most workplaces use a standardized format for email addresses. If you have somebody's name, you can send them official looking spam.

I really like the game Star Traders: Frontiers. I play on Android. One of my favorite and least favorite features is that each game can end quite suddenly in permadeath while performing some bland task. https://play.google.com&#x

Data scientists do have opportunities to work with management, but the realities of working with MBAs can be surprising. I found myself reading corporate finance textbooks to be able to fully participate when I started in data science.

This is an important point. Some Deep Learning proponents suggest that modern algorithms are so powerful that they no longer require feature engineering or expert industry knowledge. In reality, knowing exactly which questions to ask and wh

If the corporate history is to be believed, McDonald's created a profitable system for running a single restaurant and then scaled it. That concept seems quaint today, when people scale without any idea of profitability.

I'm surprised churches aren't involved in coworking. Many of them have great downtown locations with space that's only used on weekends.

For the SpaceX example, I actually think they'd be better off focusing on the orbital launch market. The dream of affordable and reliable access to space dates back to the 50's and still hasn't been fully realized. In my opin

I learned this the hard way when I started using a password manager. I had the bright idea to start using 90 character passwords for all my accounts and suddenly I couldn't log into a lot of accounts.

This is a really important topic that I wish the author had addressed. The publisher often doesn't make more money from the $200 CPM ad than it does the $2 CPM ad. Most of the difference goes to the ad network.
