If you're interested in this topic, I suggest the short book Ghosting The News.

Fascinating! Thank you for sharing your experiences. This is exactly what keeps me reading HN.

I've heard people say they want to buy because they're tired of "throwing their money away." I think it's easy to underestimate how much money homeowners pay every month and never see again. I love the house I own b

I have a similar approach. I'll read a math textbook and a novel. Helps keep me motivated to read more rather than thinking "Ugh, I need to read that textbook now."

I have only dabbled in it yet every project ends up looking stunning. I'm a corporate data scientist and I'm considering using it for more of my research findings and the like.

Not cynical at all, this is exactly how Real Time Bidding (RTB) works.

That really depends. If you're the ELCA and trying to get people to call Congress about the latest SNAP bill, you'd love to get your message in front of liberal Christians.

Reminds me of the G.K. Chesterton novel where a cop infiltrates a criminal organization only to learn that the entire group is composed of cops who have infiltrated it. I won't name the book to avoid spoilers.

I've had the same experience with code. I bang my head against my desk trying to do something, go to bed, and do the thing in the first hour of my day. It's like magic.

> To extend, the company would not be sustainable without the ads This is accurate. And Twitter runs a lucrative data sharing business. In Q1 they made $137 million from data licensing. So there are two reasons they've locked down a

Agreed! I downloaded the app, saw 10 minutes of teenage girls dancing, and deleted it. My friend talked me into giving it another chance. After a few hours, it was consistently delivering videos that were exactly my taste. I've never h

I hadn't even considered the potential power of TabNine in LaTeX! That could be a gamechanger for routine stuff. And I second your endorsement of Overleaf. I had to write a research proposal a few weeks back for work after not touching

This is worth emphasizing. There's a reverse survivor bias at play. No matter what people do, some fraction will be really bad at it. Think about any workplace. In the criminal world, these are the people who get caught the fastest and

This speaks to a fundamental truth about cryptocurrency. In order to make it easier to use, these currencies adopt the trappings of fiat currency. When I had Bitcoin a while back, I always used an exchange. Most new users will do the same.

Don't worry, the most common bug fixes will become part of the suggested code, so when you start writing patches, Copilot will have great suggestions. And then when you have to fix the new bugs, same deal.

Adding to this, I suggest finding projects that will keep your skills up with current trends. There's a famous Reddit post from a guy who slacked at work and let his skills atrophy.
