Out of a 40-year career, how much time do you think a woman needs to physically be absent from her job due to pregnancy and breastfeeding?

Congratulations to you as well! I have a two year old and I had the same realization when I was on paternity leave. You just said it better than I've been able to.

Well said. I'm aware of one large-scale randomized control trial of breastfeeding. It found a slight reduction in ear infections and other infections early in life, and no change in IQ in the teenage years. So yes, breastfeeding has be

Thank you for this comment. I have a two year old daughter and a less demanding job than my wife. That might switch in the future. I love to be able to spend so much time with my little girl. The idea that my wife should somehow be doing mo

I read it last year and I felt like I was actually on a whaling voyage. You have periods of boredom, people telling stories, other people spouting off about their philosophical ideas (God loves whalers!), and then sudden bouts of intense ac

I think there will be more competition for specific types of cloud needs. AWS, GCP, and Azure offer every service you could ever need in one place. At the other extreme, you can pay a colo facility to rack the servers you own. I think the i

Well said! It's amazing how much power you can get in a $10,000 server. If you have a simple stack and consistent demand, self hosting makes a ton of sense.

Agreed. Managing servers isn't easy, but it's also not going to get you a quarter million bucks a year.

1040s are much simpler than other taxes. Let's look at sales tax. Imagine you stop by my corner store and pick up a can of Coke, a bottle of beer, a pack of tampons, and a pair of gloves. The respective tax rates will be 8%, 10.25%, 0%

Agreed. I live in Washington DC. Generally, our tax code tries to push more of the burden on to tourists and less on average residents, with business interests falling somewhere in the middle. How we do that gets really complicated.

I'm currently studying for the PMP exam, which has made me realize just how far the promise of Agile is from how most people implement it.

I agree with you. Fields like graph theory and set theory are fun once you wrap your head around the symbols, but I remember having a lot of trouble with both as a teenager.

I 100% agree with you. I struggled with math through school. I remember wondering what the heck the point of matrices was when I was first learning about them in 10th grade. I got to grad school and I had a professor who explained everythi

None of it is truly decentralized. Most Bitcoin mining comes from three corporations. You could replicate the whole network by setting up a cross-cloud system that's balanced between AWS, Azure, and GCP.

Lately I've really gotten into reading Dover math books. They're written with such a love of the underlying topic without much concern for practical applications (most predate modern computers). For example, I read a book about gr

I wonder if ICBMs will ultimately be a use case. I'm no fan of nuclear weapons, but the governments of the world are willing to throw money at them and weapons are generally easier to harden against g forces than an undergrad cubesat.
