That's a good point. A simple k nearest neighbors search of users would likely turn up very similar people to you even if you don't explicitly include any demographics.

I live in Washington DC. There's so much car-related crime that that's exactly what we expect. Cars are getting harder to hotwire, so now people just carjack to get a car.

Also Washington DC. I love my city, but it's not a great place to be a car.

I thought about this the other week when someone casually tried to walk into my house when I was sitting ten feet from the door. She was stopped by my deadbolt. No way my home security will keep out a skilled criminal, but door locks, audit

Very well said. I think a lot of atheists would be interested in some of Luther's critiques of the church.

Do you have a citation for "you must usually be an adherent or serious prospect of conversion to the religion"? I've never worked with a church that required proof of membership or belief to receive services.

The ELCA has condemned his antisemitism while still lauding the brilliance of his theology. One is entirely separable from the other.

I don't see any conflict between reason and religion. Knowing how an atomic bomb works doesn't conflict with the rationale for why it's immoral to use one.

I'm a big fan of teaching the fun part first, but that really ought to be followed by learning the boring stuff. I think of it as teaching the What followed by the Why. Too many programs seem to stop after the first part.

I agree with you. I run a days science department in a corporation and when I'm doing code review for a junior, I can tell what was original and what came from somewhere else. Fortunately, in the workplace context that just means tryin

I've thought about this. The United States was the world leader in science and technology in the 20th century. Imagine how much farther we would be right now if more Black Americans had been in PhD programs instead of trying to avoid b

Not to mention newspapers. I spend so much of my life looking at screens that I enjoy reading the Washington Post print edition over breakfast. My one year old calls it the "daddy paper."

I got my ham radio license in March and I learned a lot about practical electricity while studying. Might be worth checking out some of the YouTube videos to see if it's up your alley.

People have been arguing that the ad tech industry is overdue for a reckoning due to its opacity and overblown promises. The book Subprime Attention Crisis is one treatment of the topic. Tightening brand budgets might force that reckoning.

My retirement funds are heavily invested in the stock market and I haven't lost nearly as much value as Bitcoin et al. And I'm convinced the stock market will recover in the next thirty years before I retire.
