I switched fully to Linux about four years ago. I chose Kubuntu. I had previously used Linux Mint for quite a while, but on a computer that wasn't my main one. I downloaded some ISOs and tried out a few distros in VMs. I definitely

Part of the problem though is that people often try to use GDP (or GDP per capita) to compare within the top of the list. Like they try to draw conclusions about whether "Germany is doing better than Italy". It's true that

Yes, but I guess I'd say that we should not attempt to capture an exact sentiment in making policy decisions. The bigger the decision, the more people are involved and affected, and the more people, the greater the variation in their

The thing is that that's not a conflict between data and lived experience, it's just a conflict between different sets of data. If you measure wealth and then you measure wealth relative to housing costs, neither one of those is

I said meaningful measure of economic health, not growth. :-) But I'm not sure. The book "Mismeasuring our lives" gives five recommendations for developing improved measures: 1. Look at income and consumption rather than p

There is also a book called "Mismeasuring our lives" that makes some similar points about the overreliance on GDP as "the" measure of economic health.

Cool idea and pretty fun. At least for this particular puzzle (island countries) though, I found myself ignoring the feedback and first and just typing as many as I could think of. Then when I did look at the feedback, I mostly just cared

It's wild how there's so much overlap between the faction that wants to champion "European culture" and "Western civilization" and the faction that will do things like this.

I generally have several thousand tabs open at a time. Hacker News is a big source of them. I use Simple Tab Groups and it takes a few seconds to switch from one group to another but I've become fairly okay with that. I use Auto Tab
