I really appreciated how candid this article was, but I don't find it very applicable to me. > I'm not going to let my fear of failure drive my decisions next time around. If we fail, we fail. A startup failure won't affect how my f

This sort of meta-discussion sucks, but when the majority of the people responding to a comment are wrong[0] (as evidenced by jsdalton's numerous downvotes), then the necessity to educate the members outweighs the desire to avoid meta-discu

I came here to say the same thing, and I'm sorry that you're being downvoted. This article is not Hacker News material. It's useful information, yes, but that does not automatically mean it's Hacker Newsworthy. Hacker News is not a funnel f

The author originally posted an article showing how compiler optimizations disproved Fermat's Last Theorem ( http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermat%27s_last_theorem ): http://blog.regehr.org/archives/140 The submission is a follow-up to that

Nope. The decrement is occurring in the test, so it occurs after the initialization and before the first iteration.

I use defaultdict a lot. It's useful not only for counters, but also for sets, lists, dicts, and even other defaultdicts. It usually results in very succinct code compared to alternatives: occurrences = defaultdict(int) digraphs = def

get() doesn't create a value in the dictionary, though; it only returns a default value. For what you describe, you would want setdefault(). It works here because you're assigning a value to a['foo'] after get()ing the default value.

Also, it would be nice if you could use stable sort (see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stable_sort#Stability ). This would allow to sort first by premium, then by deductible, then by insurance. This would allow me to see the $0/0% plans by

Exactly... in this case, the functionality of Artist() is a subset of the functionality of str(). In Python, you would just name the variable "artist", assign a string to it, and be done with it.

You're completely ignoring that in many rural areas, there are only one or two providers. When I visit my parents in rural northeast Ohio, there are only AT&T and Alltel (now Verizon) towers. My T-mobile phone roams (free to me) on the

You've got the h on the wrong side of the fraction. A Watt is a rate of energy usage: 1 J/s. It requires an amount of energy that could power 100 50-watt light bulbs for an hour to desalinate a cubic meter of water. That is, the 8765 h/y

I think you're overestimating the difficulty of getting a job. It's your life and no one else's. You don't have to fit someone else's mold of an ideal employee just to get meaningful work. Take that year. Meet some people. Talk to business
