This is just personal experience. I have both google home and alexa (plus a dot). My observation for my use: 1. Google responds more to my command with slightly (not much) more natural tones; 2. Google recipe for cooking (I tried only once)

Think that's deliberate. PS; you need to consider the context, the author is an heir to Samuel Johnson and was active in late 1800 to 1930s. For that period, I think his entries were probably considered 'plain' English.
