Catchafire is awesome. Our goal with solvers is complementary. We're very focussed on enabling hackers and other technically skilled people to solve problems. And once we've got the platform in shape, we want to build a community

Thanks for this feedback. I agree with you. At the moment a lot of the projects are looking for open-source contributors. In fact, the first 'problem' posted was also the first thing to be solved: a charity's website was runn

Wow, I hope that's not the impression we're giving. These are scientific or charitable projects, not startups. We've already had a few nice problems solved. For example, a charity that does neuroscience training in Africa had

Thanks! Better-blast is one of my side-projects from my PhD that I don't have the skills or time to do alone. I've already had offers of help from some really talented engineers from all sorts of different backgrounds. Some of the

Hi, OP here. We started building Solvers after discussions on HN in November, so we really want to get your feedback on what we're doing. Please let us know what you think of the site, the idea, and how we can recruit more projects and

I appreciated your comment. Fwiw I think a lot of people here do make an effort to think and communicate. HN has brilliant technical and intellectual discussions interspersed with snide jabs and throwaway put-downs. Don't throw out the

I'm not suggesting cutting back on research, but distributing the research budget effectively. We need some long-term research into cancer cures, but not at the cost of the lives of people who can be saved today or in the very near fut

That's true only in the specific case of HIV in the USA - the funding in the USA for cancer vs HIV is about right for the global number of deaths from those diseases. Especially if you consider that cancer is showing no sign of being a

Sure. The WHO produces a report on causes of death wordwide[0]. Heart disease and stroke are the biggest killers, but these are, like cancer, really quite complex. Diarrhoeal diseases and respiratory infections kill a ridiculous number of p

Earth is not full, it is just badly managed. And overcrowding is only happening for poor people in parts of the world historically exploited by people who are now rich. Even if we accepted that Earth is full, surely we don't just let a

Really quite a huge number of people are asking that question already. And a massively disproportionate amount of science funding goes towards cancer research. Far more people in the world die of communicable and vector-borne diseases or il
