The STL is not that bad, cppreference ( http://en.cppreference.com/w/ ) can be really helpful. Otherwise you can take a look at Boost ( http://www.boost.org ) if the STL is not enough for what you want to do. A

I use it a lot at work, the company have an IRC channel for each software on freenode, and an internal server. I also use it to talk with my friends and to ask questions on various programming languages/api on their respective channels
