>Rather than take the knee-jerk response that politicians must just be in the pocket of big media, I'm going to look at how some aspects of human behavior make this kind of highly damaging legislation more likely. Maybe I'm too cynical

Founders: in your experience, what qualifications should a "business guy" have? Is the willingness to do what your cofounder can't or what sufficient or do you need a certain business/leadership/social skill?

Anecdote alert: A female coworker who was also a close friend of mine sent me an issue, asking me if it was related to an issue I had debugged. It was, and the issue was not assigned, so I took it and closed it as duplicate. She was pissed.

The social skills were key. Without them I wouldn't have recognized the negativity of my old friends or the positivity of my new friends. Before that I couldn't even recognize the bad state my friends were putting me in. Also, they enabled

I feel compelled to share my current process of understanding and dealing with my own introversion. Maybe this will resonate with others, maybe not. Where I am right now, it's more important for me to be able to share this than anything els

To answer your question literally: Congressmen like credit card companies because of their large campaign contributions. Anyone hoping to disrupt will have to overcome the fact that the rules of the game are being written against them. Payp

Congress doesn't really care about tax dollars so much as individual congressmen care about campaign contributions. So you'd have to convince congressmen that they'll get more contributions by changing the patent system than by keeping it t

Ah, I hadn't considered that reading of it. For what it's worth, I'd want a full stop period or even line break before the second punchline before I'd read it that way. In that way the joke is perhaps much more funny to people who read it t

I was a little jarred that he explicitly mentioned rape. Don't get me wrong, nothing is off-limits for a joke, provided it is funny enough, but this joke is just as funny without the last clause. Including it is just redundant, not to menti

My point stands. She identifies herself as female for the purposes of giving a data point and explain why she wrote the post in the first place. The author left a follow-up comment: my point isn't that that female coders aren't interested

Is there some reason the author should be able to explain the motivation of all female coders? She saw that people were wondering why females weren't showing up, and she gave her personal reasons. She's giving a single data point, not tryin

For more nerd out of water action, there is a Penny Arcade TV episode focusing on Gabe and Tycho's invitation to the Time 100 dinner. Not a lot of footage of the actual event for practical reasons, I'd imagine. http://www.penny-arcade.com/

The finance sector is a perfect example of how an industry influences the government for profit, to the detriment of the greater goals of a society. I don't think lawsuits are a suitable way to deal with the energy problem, but I could be c

Yeah, the last factor I didn't quite follow. Seems like the original author felt like 8000 was too large, so he needed a bullshit excuse to scale it down one more time.

Actually, according to arstechnica, that lack of hesitation was before the segment was reshot. A human had answered "missing a hand," which created context that means "What is a leg" could be interpreted as "he was missing a leg". Initially

Sounds good to me. Unfortunately, politicians have more to gain by giving tax breaks to successful company compared to helping new small businesses, which is probably why there's not a lot of political will for ideas like this.

I don't think teaching them, or their staffs, to use version control will be the major obstacle. Convincing representatives that they need to be more accountable when it doesn't really help them get reelected will be much harder.
