It makes a lot of sense in the app store, simply because there's no way to 'try before you buy' otherwise. The basic store page gives relatively little information about how the app runs and behaves.

I was going to post nearly the same thing. It may upset the strikers, but it's a brilliant business move by Uber to snag some customers that may not have given it a shot otherwise, and turn them into repeat users.

Most of these 'rules' simply won't work everywhere. Stop getting hung up on your (or their) particular format. - Respect the recipient's time. Be brief as possible, but not vague.

Interesting article that matches up with my long (driving) commute experiences. Driving well requires you to be alert and focused for that entire time, which is effort better allocated elsewhere. I'm currently job-hunting, but recently turn

It's doable, but I skipped it in the HN reader for iPad that I did. Why? Because of the people I know who read HN, none of them use OpenID. Unfortunately, the mobile Safari doesn't share that information with the app UIWebView. It needs to

Congrats! You had similar logic to why I made an App specifically to read HN on the iPad. It's very odd that you initially had trouble getting it accepted, as mine didn't have an issue at all with the initial version. With more screen space

Sounds like something I'd love to be hearing about since I started in Chem myself. Is there a non-software tech news aggregator? Or even a blog by you with interesting developments.

When I think 'innovation' I'm generally not even thinking about web applications - but you've got some great examples! I think of more physical projects like RepRap (reprap.org) OpenFarmTech and SpaceX that are really pushing things in a n

I've been using Goodreads to log 'interesting' books that I come across online, and getting from the library&amazon when I need more. They do get more in depth, and force you to focus a bit more - no mail or tweets popping up in the mid

I want to agree the portfolio is all that matters, but in my experience it's not the first priority for the people hiring. There's a huge pool of people who CAN do the work, and many people hiring can't easily make the determination of qual

Great! The original blog post seemed a bit dismissive of the concept, so good to hear that it's at least being considered. Agreed that there should be some kind of separation, rather than hosting from within the prototype area.

Right, a seamless deploy to a 'production' site would be worth an added fee to a lot of people. From the blog post, it seems like they spent a lot of mental effort around the development direction and sidestepping a possible added revenue s

I'm not looking at NASA's progress at all here. I'm sure SpaceX can accomplish a lot in that time frame, but saying they'll definitely be on Mars then is simply wishful thinking. Lift capacity is not the sole limiting factor.

Targeting 10-20 years is basically wishful thinking. The time horizon is too long to make serious estimates. Look at fusion! Workable fusion has been 10-20 years off as long as I can remember.

Apple is not a threat to IBM's core businesses. IBM as it is currently operating is. The current awesome results to investors is at the expense of the US workforce and non-research lab innovation.

I agree with the main point of the article that you can't have the victim mindset, but disagree with the examples. Thinking any of these things doesn't mean you're doomed. Only if you let it stop you.
