As a Linux user, it unfortunately doesn't have a definitive anything. Say you want to write a GUI app. On Windows, you've got Win32. It's old, but it'll still work and look new. MacOS you have Cocoa. Linux, you have Xlib

It feels like lock-in to me. It keeps getting more difficult to develop for Mac, which I think will kill the free software scene for it. Honestly, it's almost like Windows programming in the late '90s. You had only one real option

I concur. The documentation is very incomplete. I know it can do a lot of stuff, but I wouldn’t know how to make it do it. It doesn’t seem to be intended for wide use, more like “here’s what we use, it’s open source, do whatever, but we’re

Part of it is security, part of it is lock-in. Either way, it’s excessive. It contributes to entropy more than security.

Earlier games were written to the bare metal, so copying the hardware was the hard part. More recent stuff is written to APIs, so you can avoid most of that, but the addition of 3D and more complexity means it’s just difficult in a differen

They are expertly-written, but I don’t think these header-only libraries are reflective of most C++ projects. There’s too many tricks and templates that make it hard to read and get a big picture of how it works.

Path of Exile was actually broken a few weeks ago and required a third-party Proton build to work. It was sheer luck that Proton 5.13 came out just in time for you to try it.

To be fair, themes are only grudgingly supported by gnome. KDE has more available configurability for color schemes, but the number of Qt themes that handle everything correctly and look good is small. I think resolution-independence has ma

It's not as cool or fast as it could be, technically, because they're just using Mesa as a software rasterizer with the existing OpenGL engine port. It's hilarious, though.

Yeah, and in that case the issue is in the opaque NVIDIA drivers that reimplement the whole X server. The NVIDIA Linux driver is laser-focused for areas it does well, and exotic configurations never worked out with it for me. If you might p

Yes, it changes rasterization. It’s because MacOS has a legacy of dilating the pixel outlines when subpixel antialiasing is enabled. When subpixel antialiasing first appeared on OS X, the FIR filter affected the gamma curve, making the font
