There is no federated client-independent IM future with Hangouts because the Hangout model does not map to instant messaging. It's not about protocol support.

Google Talk supports XMPP federation and has done so since January 2006. To deal with an onslaught of spam, Google disabled incoming subscription requests for a short time. During this time, all other XMPP federation features continued to w

Starting with IE4, Internet Explorer provided an asynchronous interface for fetching URLs. If I recall correctly, you had to go out of your way to use the synchronous interface. It's great that somebody made XHR asynchronous, but it was jus

It was Adam Bosworth's idea. People on Adam's team built it. Edit: I recall seeing Bosworth's auction demo in late '97 or early '98. This predates Hopmann's timeline. Perhaps my memory is faulty.

> They have been known to oversell the language. There's a lot of hype about Go, but I am not aware of cases where Google is overselling the language. Can you give examples?

I doubt that Google is rewriting 50% of their code in two years. Perhaps they said that 50% of new projects will be written in Go.

Thank you for the detailed answer. Go 1.1 (to be released early next month) is across the board faster than 1.03. The ab tool is not ideal for testing the Go http server because the Go server is not tuned to ab's quirks. Siege might be bett

Node will perform better under high concurrency too for most sized responses. Can you share evidence supporting this claim?

"If you want to roll your own mirror simply change github.com/foo to my mirror.com/foo in your code" Instead of changing the code, use a version control command to clone your repository mirror to your workspace.

The 'go get' sub-command is the only part of Go that interprets the import path as the location of a version control system repository. The use of the 'go get' sub-command is optional. You can use version control commands directly to get c

Why do you build in the server instead of cross compiling on the client and pushing a binary? Cross compiling will allow developers to use GOPATH instead collecting all dependencies in a directory tree for upload dotCloud.

There are articles on the web about Instagram's history. If I recall correctly, a couple of people built the first version in a small number of months including both server and client. The server used Python, PostgreSQL, Redis and Linux.

The Microsoft employment contract has a one year non-compete clause. Microsoft has shown that it is willing to enforce non-competes and it is easy to do so under Washington State law.

There are several generic data access layers implemented in Go: standard JSON package, Gustavo's BSON package, App Engine Data store and more. They all use the reflect package internally.

I get the point about the ecosystem being small, but not how it relates to deployment. Because Go executables are statically linked, deploying Go apps is very easy.

Go, C, C++, etc. are static languages. Make a little change here? Gotta recompile. Big project? Might take a while. Not with Go. Go compiles super fast.
