Slacking in Apple? From what I've seen, Apple engineers probably amongst the hardest of the FAANG - probably less so than Amazon if I had to guess, but I know my Google, FB, and Netflix friends do not work nearly as hard.

Most math you learn in undergrad was invented 200-300 years ago - 50-200 years ago is grad level material.

If it were something worth asking to figure out who is a good hire, maybe - however, it's viewed as irrelevant at most jobs, so why waste precious interviewing time asking about irrelevant grades? It's a waste of time, and thus un

Great content alone won't maximize stickiness - better UX than competitors is also a major selling point. For example, on Netflix you currently don't get ads, which when compared to broadcast TV or even some streaming services, yo

To add to the comments here, I highly recommend networking locally at meetups if you can - those have the best bang for the buck for first positions that I've seen for people.

Modules avoid the variable issue because ‘use strict’ is applied by default for them. IMO JS as a language is in a much better place than Python currently. I end up frustrated a fair amount by arcane errors in Python due to less expressive

They just happen to be people who has done Java - we hire the best devs we can, regardless of language experience (my own team has interviewed/hired people who have done primarily Python, Ruby, JavaScript, Clojure, and/or Java). A

FWIW, I'm in a FAANG and finding Scala devs is even a problem within my own org and team. We've resorted to teaching largely Java devs Scala on the job with mixed results. A former senior manager who made the decision supposedly v

I'd argue that inheritance and mixin patterns are both things you should stay away from, whether it's Angular, React, or whatever, they have proven to be poor patterns IMO and it is simple enough to create reusable abstractions wi

It surprises me too personally - the testing experience is worlds better, better built in modules than what you get in the React ecosystem (especially routing, http request layer, forms, testing, etc.), and opinionation that helps improve t

I personally found JS much easier and accessible than Python, but YMMV. I tried a number of different languages when I first started seriously pursuing a job in dev - C++, PHP, Ruby, Python, and eventually I settled on JS. JS let me quickly

For another data point, I just completed a flight on a United 787 from SFO to Seoul (12-13 hours) - that was a rough flight, almost as bad as my flights from SFO to Haneda (I puked on or from both flights to Haneda), and I had a wicked head

That's why I'm at a big company now instead of startups, where I have most of my experience in my career (about 5 years). 2 years of working at a lower paying FAANG and I am getting ~$320k total compensation for a mid-level dev (g
