I would define crashing as "camera and/or essential hardware broken", and landing what it's not. That is, if it returns surface pictures, then it landed. Otherwise - crashed.

My father's last company started to fall apart a few years ago, and he kind of let go of it and let it die. He is in the early 60s. It was a rather gradual transition from him working hard every day and an occasional weekend, to not do

Huh, i heard them say "controlled descent". That is, they would try to land the probe on the surface, rather than slam-crash it intentionally. With the kind of gravity comets have, crashing might be trickier than landing.

That's odd. First they try to close borders to migrants, and now they welcome migrants? How is that supposed to work?

Somehow this reminds me of Dr. Daystrom defending the M-5 computer, back in the original series.

Not sure by now - it was shown to me last summer. The thing basically scanned a line across the image, and produced sound based on the brightness. So, with your eyes closed you could quite easily imagine a basic shape of the image from the

Now, when would they make something like that that would go backwards? I want to strap a GSM module to a balloon, let it fly around the world and SMS it's position every so often.

Hm, why not - here is the raw data (after PDM decoding) for the 16x16 video from the article: http://orbides.org/etc/snd_16x16_raw.tar.gz (4 Mb) One file per cell, 16bit integer samples. Stored row by row, 128 slices p

I've seen a phone app that does this - turns the camera's video into sound. With a bit of training, deaf people can use it to "see" the surrounding.

Ah, that might be the company i heard of. Thought they only did near-field. Yep, that looks very close to what i'm making.

Don't that require making regular content? My posts are fairly random by time and quality, and most are just rants on various philosophical nonsense [0] or game design [1]. Wouldn't be fair to people who signed up for something li

A human brain is very plastic. There is an app that can turn a picture from the phone's camera into sound real-time, and after a few minutes of training you can start to "see" the picture from listening to that sound. Fascina

Interesting. Can it take 16 simultaneous SPI-like channels of data going at 40-ish MHz, and pack it into a USB uplink?

About a year ago. He invited me in after seeing the "How do you make batteries that work on Venus" article ( http://orbides.org/page.php?id=1005 ) i wrote on my own semi-dead site.

Ironically, this thing can't record sound as we know it - it only have enough buffer space for a few hundreds of samples per mic, 30 times per second. They are to be FFT-ed rather than continuously recorded. While such a contraption sh

Not exactly. A sonar maps a surface using sound, while my camera looks at the sound itself. Think laser rangefinder on a scanner platform vs a camera.

Yeah. From the hacker's point of view many such projects seem trivial, not worth bothering to talk about. You really need a spotter to find out which of your projects are cool and which aren't. Then again, after trying to post a d

Not exactly unheard of, but quite rare. I found a company that made large arrays like that, but they seem to operate in near field, measuring only the sound volume. Imagine a wall of microphones next to a truck - you can tell which part of

If it's something like Oculus Rift, then yes - you can move your head around and lean closer, for example. If it's something simpler, with no head tracking, then no - you are fixed in one place.
