Why are buildings built with 3 times the structural integrity than they need? Why are wires several times thicker than they need to carry the power the house needs? Why are hammers much harder than nails? It's called redundancy - you c

That is familiar... I'm 30 and i tend to think of my savings in terms of lasting the rest of my life, even though i don't plan to live on them. I quit a falling apart job a year ago, and was staying above break even on odd opportu

Perhaps it all goes down to lifestyle inflation more than any inherent expense scaling with income opportunities. I've heard of people in SF spending $1-$2 a day on food, living in a trailer and showering at work, while making 6 figure

Why is it painted as a problem? Why should you spend more than you need? Why is "enjoying a retirement" supposed to only be achieved by spending more money? I don't get the point of the article.

Hm? Win 10 one was released in March, but XP's one wasn't released until WannaCry was rampaging in May. The fishy part is that they prepared an XP update well in advance, but didn't release it until after the rampage.

It certainly depends on the industry. I.e. here in Russia if you work in the oil industry you would be making mad amounts of money. It is hard to get into, however, and you would have to live in middle of nowhere, Siberia for years. Not qui

Well, people who make $200k tend to live in places when you spend $40-80k on rent or mortgage, $10-$20k on food and utilities, god knows how much on medical insurance, and all after 30%-40% taxes, leaving you with about zilch to save. Or so

Hindsight is 20-20 but does not swivel forward. One strategy is to make a habit of staking odd, unusual or long-sighted ideas. You would lose 9 out of 10 stakes, but hopefully the tenth would cover the losses. I found out about bitcoin arou

Huh? It tends to be the opposite - government places like schools or hospitals run on tightly reglamented software and processes, and updating ANYTHING is a hard, long struggle. You would often find computers running XP or less around such

So, if it says "Error: IOCTL_MEI_CONNECT_CLIENT receive message. err=-1", what does it mean? Tried it on i5-6260U, should be new enough to have the thing.

I've been doing it for a decade [1]. Not a lot of success on the big one - before FPV it was notoriously hard to fly, and after FPV it turned out it was unstable on sharp turns (see crash videos). Haven't gotten around building a

I used to set the alarm to 7:45 and 8:00 (to be out of the door by 8:10). The ability to lightly sleep the last 15 minutes is very refreshing. These days i'm self-employed, so pretty much gave up on alarm clocks and go to sleep and wak

Altcoins are like pokemon - just collect 'em all. Drop $1000 into each with an original idea, $100 into each that sounds legit and $10 into each of the remaining ones (ignoring the ones which are just a fork with a couple lines of code

Once upon a time a kid me realized that anything he put in autoexec.bat gets executed when the computer boots. Soon after i figured out how to do branching and input and made a start-menu-of-a-sorts thingy. It only went downhill from there.
