We should stop thinking in terms of "tech companies" and think of them in terms of "companies that use tech with a high degree of success". Ultimately any company that makes money is not a tech company because pure techn

I think one imbalance in the industry is that software engineers require years of on the job training to be able to independently get things done. In medicine this is also the case which is why doctors have to go through a residency. Junior

You should definitely listen to Bach's mass in B minor and his cantatas if you like vocal work and Bach. Also listen to Mozart's Requiem. Some other good stuff would be all the symphonies by Mozart and Beethoven. Vivaldi's fo

This is an exciting project but the visuals are so poorly designed that it makes my eyes hurt. I think bringing in some designers could lead to something really elegant here.

This reminds me of some advice I got from a grad student as an undergrad -- "It's important to not care TOO much when doing research. Most things don't work out the way you expect and you'll always be disappointed or eve

I think focusing on apps alone misses the point. Startups like Uber or Peloton or Affirm are not just apps they all solve business problems like logistics, hardware, or access to financing. Yes they use software, but doesn't everybody?

A better name for AI is "pattern recognition" because thats what it is. There is nothing intelligent about it.

The reason they do this is so that they can later monetize the dataset.

The data license seems to be research-only. How would people be able to build products/medical device software with this license? Or is that not a goal of releasing this data?

I can't agree more. I made some progress on Japanese only to find that when I spoke it was completely incomprehensible to a native speaker. I think speech/pronunciation correction is still an unsolved problem.

Right, a lot of nut and fruit-bearing plants take many years to start bearing fruit. You can't just replace your almonds with some other crop overnight.

I think a lot of companies will allow engineers to come up with their own questions for candidates without much oversight. This can lead to the above scenario where an engineering interviewer thinks this could be a good way to check if an e

Good reminder of how ephemeral things are in the software industry -- much of the software we use today will be obsolete in 15 years.

With WFH one could expect the total miles driven per year to decrease drastically due to less commuting. This would make the lifetimes of cars longer and lead to lower demand -- a second way in which software is "eating" the car.

you could do it by hashing the content and then sending back the hashes to some server for them to check but really if the code is not open source it doesn't really help for them to claim E2E. You don't really have any guarantees

Theres a lot of reasons why it makes sense to sell something before building it. You want to be up front about this fact but getting commitments to buy something is a good idea before actually spending money and time to build it.
