This article was posted on HN a while back suggesting exactly that: https://hackernoon.com/leaner-alternatives-to-server-side-re... It's just as ridiculous as it sounds.

> Might it be true that women are just naturally much less attracted to STEM than men? No. In India in 2015, 45% of CS undergrads were women[0]. In the US, in 1984, it was 37%[1], as opposed to 18% in 2010. The downvotes are because yo

I don't think that's entirely unique to Lisps, you can get a REPL into an existing Erlang instance very easily. More easily than getting nREPL running in Clojure, actually. I believe Smalltalk as well, although I'm less con

As far as I can tell, "illegal" and "undocumented" instructions are the same thing[0]. Likely they are "illegal" according to the spec of the processor, and that's where the term came from. [0] At least a

How is "opt-out option types" different from, say, Java, where everything is nullable and all the problems that come with that? Honest question, as I haven't had a chance to look into P6 as much as I would like. It looks pre

I highly recommend that you try out a language with good support for option/maybe types: Haskell and Rust are good options here. Very often, your error handling through a chain of operations will be to use a slightly different operator

The use of what most HN users would consider an absurd number of tabs is shockingly (to me anyway) common among the non-tech-worker crowd. I'd say about half of my family members that don't work in tech have at least dozens and pr

Well first, Elixir isn't purely functional. It's got side effects all over the place, it just doesn't have mutable variables. Second... While I love static typing as much as the next guy, there's definitely value in imm

This seems like a Rube Goldberg solution for a problem better solved by just... not using a SPA for a page with the primary function of displaying text. I mean, maybe I'm missing something. What's an example of a page where this w

That's very disappointing. While I don't begrudge Cognitect money, it's obviously possible to make money with an OSS database and I wish they'd gone that route. It's my opinion that your database is the #1 most impo

Also, some databases, such as Cassandra[0] divide data into multiple files on disk which are sorted within the file but not between files, and use bloom filters to prune down the number of files which must be checked for a given key. [0]:

For what it's worth, I'm in the process of converting one of our components from JavaScript to Java because it is incredibly fragile, difficult to modify, and everyone hates working with it. Not everyone is forced to use Java. I r

The problem is "Prolog is the database" is that there isn't a great solution for persisting that database, which is usually what people mean when they talk about databases. Sure, for SWI-Prolog there's Persistency but th
