Why on earth should any software developer care about the calculus underneath their database? That is surely only the domain of database developers, researchers, and hobbyists?

Sorry if I am being ignorant, but can someone explain to me Hackernews' obsession with Lisp? I don't hear anyone talk about Lisp or use Lisp anywhere except on Hackernews.

We use bazel for our builds at work, I think it works quite well, but then our bazel guy left the company and no one else dares touch it aside from basic updates because it’s really complex and a bit of a dark art in itself.

My team does exactly this too, especially during the pandemic when we couldn't socialise outside of work. We spend 10-15 minutes before standup bantering and our team has come out stronger for it. Even though we'd lose that 15 min

One of my favourite Go security features is the single binary output, it means I can build my binaries into a distroless base image container for running in K8S. It removes a huge attack and vulnerability surface that containers introduce.

This is great, I particularly like the part about using compute from old unwanted iPhones. Quite an inventive way to reuse/recycle otherwise obsolete hardware!

Yeah, I did debate not including that part. I think I would elaborate by saying… Saving the earth isn’t profitable for companies in the business of making consumer products (in most cases). But for companies that make essential sustainable

Saving the earth is a complex aim with so many different areas to prioritise. Synthetics may produce micro plastics, but then natural fibers like cotton require huge amounts of pesticides and water, viscose or bamboo requires a shit load of

An operating system isn’t a tool, it’s a means to an end. It’s like saying it’s bad I don’t know how all the internal components of my car work because I rely on my car to get to work. As far as I am concerned, my operating system is a blac

In principle I would love to use Linux, as the developer experience isn’t great on Windows, and I would rather not be tied into expensive Apple computers. However, I don’t want to learn about components of my operating system, that is below

Oh wow I wasn’t expecting it to work that way. I was expecting to have to use some kind of podman aliased compose alternative that copies the CLI of docker compose.

Huh this was literally 2 weeks ago I looked into this and ended up using a third-party community podman docker compose substitute. I will have another look.

Podman has been a massive disappointment for me. I stupidly gave up my docker desktop because the company was trying to make cost savings and it was supposedly a drop-in replacement. Some short-lived containers like our repo’s linter takes

I agree about Go. One quite frustrating scenario I have ran into multiple times is if you unmarshal (parse) some JSON into a struct, you can’t tell if an integer field with value 0 was specified in the JSON input as 0, or missing from the i

Air quality should be a bigger consideration in schools, I bet students will be more attentative and able to focus better without high CO2 levels. We should create the conditions to allow them to succeed.

I disagree, I think that handling the failure cases properly is much more complex and requires more consideration than the success cases. Sure, in many cases you’re going to bubble up the error (perhaps a syntactic sugar for this scenario w
