This is not true :| We do everything to encrypt new features - eg voice messages, polls, location share etc are all encrypted. It’s the old features which predate e2ee (state events like topics or sticker packs and aggregations like react

for the sake of completeness: they aren’t orthogonal. the reason that element web can take tens of seconds to launch is not just because it’s syncing with the server, but because it is loading hundreds of MB of json from indexeddb. Sliding

fwiw, the team that created Matrix almost exclusively used Java serverside from 2003-2014 (when we switched to creating Matrix). The last gen of Java servers we wrote were super efficient and nice to maintain thanks to netty. The only rea

I wouldn't waste time trying to be nice; I'll turn up whatever if you'll have me. Cryptographically constrained room membership in Matrix is still stuck behind consolidating on matrix-rust-sdk for E2EE, so we only have to add

Fixing this has been the primary focus of the core Matrix team over the last year - we revealed the end result at FOSDEM a few weeks ago, and it literally improves performance to be better than Telegram/Discord/Slack or anything e

ironically, i agree with much with this: Matrix began in May 2014; we started E2EE in Feb 2015 and turned it on by default in May 2020. Centralised systems are way simpler and easier to reason about and present a smaller attack surface. I

I’m not sure you could kill Matrix now even if you wanted to? Heck, given people still run gopher & WAIS & fidonet servers today, so even if everyone runs away from Matrix, it’ll still keep burbling away somewhere :)

In the current wording: yes, you can go encrypt your messages with PGP before sending them. However, the worst-case scenario is that Ofcom would then say to Apple and Google: "Hey, you are communication service providers (thanks to iMe

you’re running on 2018 vintage data. plus there is no centralisation on matrix.org (beyond it being the biggest server), as has been pretty obvious in the situations where matrix.org has gone offline.

The problem is that even a single user matrix server can be very resource intensive if that user joins big rooms with thousands of users spread over thousands of servers. Synapse is very database heavy, so the parallelism in Postgres helps
