SSH is not disallowed, because there are still cases where it is necessary to ssh in order to service faulty hardware. However, ssh is disallowed for making any ad hoc changes to any system, unless that is done by removing, installing, or u

Not unrelated, in tandem. Once the systems are provisioned, the software deployment server is used to mass deploy components and bundles (OS packages) and is integrated into the change management process (for example, no deployment to produ

"Custom DHCP config"?!? You do realize DHCP stands for "dynamic host configuration protocol"? That's exactly what it was designed for... And if you can't get "working PXE" (PXE is implemented in firmw

Guys you are all going down some block chain tangent. The point is that a relational database is designed for storing data, and that works well. The moral of Jimmy's response was if you need to store and retrieve data a relational dat

No... that is not system engineering. System engineering would be thinking about how the program to enable configuration templating with shell variables will work, how you can consistently add and remove templated, variable expandable confi

It would be /var/opt/nix since it's data. Payload in /opt/nix and configuration in /etc/opt/nix. That's what the specification states.

Same here. Then I come back to the site ten years later on another assignment and the solutions I put in are still there. I ask why and am then told that they work reliably, so why rip them out? There is nothing I can say to that but be gla

Yes, and while they might be very clever, they are still not clever enough to make complex problems simple, as that requires extreme cleverness, experience and insight.

This is so wrong on so many levels. So many complications. Monstrously huge binaries. Static linking. Docker and Nix mess of complex instructions, all custom. With RPM, it is one command, rpmbuild, with a standardized spec file and no need

I've been driving manual transmission cars for several decades now, a lot in traffic jams (almost every time I'm on the road) and have had no issues with the clutches or my left knee or my left leg in general. I would rather dro

I own multiple cars, in part for exactly such a situation (N + 1 redundancy, just like I design computer systems). Luckily, taking my car to the shop is rare, as I have the requisite knowledge and wrench on my cars myself.

HN decides a lot of dumbass stupid things, which is precisely why the dumbest ones end up on n-gate.com and elsewhere (exempli gratia:"Twitter") being the butt of jokes. It's not shameful not to know something, but it's

For the record, I spent the first 19 years of my life using public transportation and walking for kilometers on end. While I still don't mind walking and do so for half an hour every day (15 minutes to the parking lot and back), I have

All my life since I was a wee lad I dreamed of owning a car and driving. Now that I drive a 589 HP supercharged V8 with a manual transmission, there's no way I'd move to anywhere where I couldn't drive to work! Every day is

I've worked with plenty of people who had no business working in IT, but some of them were smart enough to recognize that they could benefit from education, so I taught them how to correctly and properly program in shell. Others were j

GAWK is not a real AWK!!! When will you people learn that GNU is not UNIX®️? FS is not used on the command line and doing so is asking for trouble. FS is a built-in variable and as such is treated specially.

That is not how FS is set; It's set with -F. And there is actually no need to use -v, passing variables at the end works consistently across all AWK's and always has: echo "" | awk '{print Bla;}' Bla="

Every contemporary AWK supports -v. Real AWK from UNIX®️ supported -v since at least the '80's.
