Exactly. Pandora's box was wide open by that point. XHTML would have been a good idea at the start of the web, but not ~2000 during/after the dotcom boom. And if you can't mix existing web content with XHTML stuff it defeats

One of the first things I do on family computers is set PDFs to open in Chrome. (If I have time and the authority I also remove Acrobat.) It's saved me a lot of hassle.

That is amazing!! I will check that out whenever it's done. Thank you for your work! Dumb question: why not flip through the pages, take screenshots, then use OCR? Maybe some kind of jank Amazon DRMalike?

TBH I've come around on it and I kinda prefer the Fischer Price phone UIs over the sites with random smatterings of 7px microfont, .ASPX pages redirecting eighteen times, and functions hidden two levels deep in floating overflow navs (

For the first time ever I ran into a web app blocking Desktop Mode on Chrome for Android somehow. (ChowNow) I've seen sites detect it but issue a warning, but this was a full functionality-block. I was literally using it fine one day,

Just a small data point/anecdote: I think the calls to install native apps are actually decreasing now. I don't get spammed for that nearly as much as 2014-2018 or so. Even banks seem to be getting comfortable with making mobile o

Google Photos is an odd example to use, since it hasn't been enshittified (yet) beyond some questionable UI redesigns. I agree self hosting your photos is the way to go, though.

They got me by the balls with Kindle. Someone(/me if I had enough time) should make some kind of LLM scraper extension for Amazon's Web Reader. Run it on your own ebooks while you're signed in and you get the EPUBs. Maybe thi

Throw away the DMCA and you throw away all safe harbors for websites, and then the internet is truly screwed. There's no way the current congress would ever accept such a thing again -- Section 230 has been weaponized against it alre

Google was always terrified by the fact that they had no moat in Search. This was clear from interviews and articles at the time. That's why they decided to roll up the ad market instead, and once they had the advertisers Search became

For multiplayer games, I'm not sure that would be a detriment to the experience in any way. Procedural generation is a known quantity in gaming, with well-explored pros and cons.

If you double tap to skip 10 seconds during an ad read, it should appear as a button in the bottom right. It does not pop up proactively. It's algorithmically-based on which parts of the video get skipped most often by viewers.

I think it's less ominous than that. Skip Ahead is only for Premium subscribers. The logic probably being native-ads/sponsorships are in fact ads, and Premium users are paying for an ad-free experience.
