Games are a totally valid business and solve the problem of boredom. It seems like you're dismissing games as a category of business and that's silly. Just look at the giant video game industry. I don't think that's all a location-based s

If they're finding enough qualified applicants, then that's great for them. If not, I just wanted to point out the problems with this scenario that make me as a technical person never ever respond to this. 1) Programmers hate working with

We might just be quibbling over good vs great, but the number of professional programmers producing code out in the real world that can't write a simple fizzbuzz method is astounding.

The largest difference between Code Anthem and TopCoder is that Code Anthem ranks you between 0-10 compared to other programmers, whereas TopCoder is a never-ending point system that rewards average programmers for spending more time on the

The biggest difference is #2. Look at the high scorers on TopCoder. They have a ridiculous number of points, but are they really the best programmers? No, they are decent programmers who spend a great deal of time on the site. As a very

That's a good question. Code Anthem is different because... 1) Programmers are ranked based on how they do relative to everyone else, not pass/fail on some random, meaningless level. (like certifications) 2) The only thing that is rewarded

But this is not just a hobby, this is their life's work. Could you image if someone said their husband was "a doctor, or something like that..." and if you asked what they specialized in (surgeon, orthopedics, etc) you would have no idea?

You guys seem really positive. How do you stay positive in the face of so much negativity that must come your way? This post is one example, but I assume there's a lot more where that came from.

I don't disagree, but if that's truly all of your hiring critera, then you need to be willing to wait a long time and pay a lot of money. And that's personally the way I'd go. What I find is that a lot of people say they want all that, and

Without a college degree, you need to target places who don't really have an HR department or where the technical folks are so revered that they can overrule HR (not easy). I would look for small software shops. Alternatively you can brand

Do you have any beta sign ups? If there is a recurring theme that might make it easy to select a niche. Another thing you can do is select a niche, any niche, that you are already active in, like gaming or cooking or something like that.
