Sampling lowers your confidence resolution, period. When you're testing hypotheses the biggest constraint can be that the effect you're looking for is too small to be within the resolution that your confidence intervals give you. Improving

I have a hard time seeing why, these days, an extra 1.2k for something that makes a task simpler and more consistent is ever "overkill".

I agree with everything you said, but if you watch the actual video, the performance is clearly not tied to the particular song:)

As someone who would take such a preservationist position, I think this is my best argument: It is morally inconsistent to think that super-intelligent life should leave us intact if we were found, and at the same time be willing to interfe

> For example, what is multiplication by i+1? Without further understanding, I don't think such a question can be answered. i+1 on the plane is a vector at 45 degrees and a scaling of sqrt(2). So multiplying by it scales your multiplier

The sex issue is just frivolous. E.g. I haven't had anything but rejection from a woman in three years, I'm perfectly healthy and functional, and I'm not being carefully chosen for one of the most groundbreaking missions for the human race.

I agree. Imagine that time is used (instead of current balance), and A pays out if the current second is divisible by three, and B pays out if it is one more than a multiple of three. A and B are both losing games if played every second, bu

Then again, how many times have you found a bug caused by a single line or function call or bit of syntax that didn't do exactly what you thought, that was easily overlooked? Particularly in someone else's code in a language that isn't your

I think it's quite dramatic how many very intelligent people (up to writers in major publications) are uneducated about this distinction, and how dramatically wrong decisions can be if this is misunderstood. If we could teach this, as well

A couple of extreme examples: 1. I'm rolling two dice to try and get the highest total. I get two sixes. What is the chance randomness produces this? 1/36, about 0.027. This more than a two sigma result. What is the chance that this is caus

"An extra 10 calories a day puts more weight onto an obese person than on a thinner one." It needs to be explained how he determined that this isn't related to _why_ they are obese in the first place, i.e. whether these are purely correlati

I would add that you need to be realistic about what is possible. Realize you can easily fluctuate your weight plus or minus ten pounds. A pound of water isn't very much, and your body's glycogen stores plus water can amount to 5-10 pounds.
