Adblocker is one of the first things I installed for my mother on her new computer. For me seeing ads is an annoyance, but for her it's a real problem. She can't instantly distinguish adverts from content - particularly things like Adsens

Completely OT but I just don't get anime at all. What am I missing? I got 10 minutes through Episode 1 at that link expecting something to happen - nothing did. I don't even really follow the storyline - a wimpy kid who can only stop him

We need a community fund that can be used for things like this. The equivalent of a hardship fund with an aim of protecting our internet freedoms. It's good for the world, it's good for us individually, and it's good for business. Everyone

I'd be interested to see numbers. But I feel like the numbers used to be roughly 50% of investments were wipe-outs. 40% brought back the 1-2x returns, and 10% delivered a 5x. Ie. 1 in 10 investments was responsible for the profits. Now

I thought this long before HP acquired Autonomy. Had I shorted Autonomy I'd have lost. But you're right about HP.

For me, this highlights why tech investing is so frustrating. I saw this coming and would have shorted Autonomy if I had the money. But guess what? I'd have lost a fortune even though I was (allegedly) right. DHH has been shorting Salesfo

Haha. Here's another one I am skeptical about - BlinkX. Edit: I just went to check their stock price - it's down 12%. Hmmm, I thought, has Autonomy cast a shadow on UK techs? Wait a minute - who's this grimmacing at me down the bottom? h

I agree that full employment is not sustainable. But that's a positive thing. Full employment in 1857 meant everyone from the age of 13 working 60 hours a week in rough conditions. Now full employment means everyone over 21 working 48 hou

Yeah, of course. But I did say that the iPhone was the anomaly. You can get an iPad there, but these are phone shops, not computer shops. My point about Macs stands.

I've been thinking a lot about Apple recently. Here's a brain dump: 1. Apple cannot compete with their current strategy outside metropolitan areas - and that's most of the world. I'm in rural France at the moment. There is nowhere to buy

How underwhelming. At 7.9 inches, it’s perfectly sized to deliver an experience every bit as big as iPad What does that even mean? Either it's perfectly sized, and the iPad is the wrong size. Or it's not. There can surely only be one p

Should FB buy them? Much of Zynga's trouble has been that their interests and Facebook's didn't align. My first thought was "Why bother? FB can just wait and pick up the good staff in the wind down." But the exact opposite of that logic

Unfortunately last year Google Ireland barely broke even. A tiny €24mil profit on a turnover of €12.5 BILLION [1] Perhaps some charitable Irish taxpayer could sort their domain name out for them? 1: http://www.irishtimes.com/newspaper/fin

It feels like I've seen lots of these chat clients on ShowHNs. Isn't there even a YC-backed one? TinyChat or something? This one is nicely done though - here are my immediate thoughts on tweaks (mostly ideas from other in the chat rooms,

Here's a crazy idea. A hedge fund puts a couple billion dollar short on Apple, and then pays 20,000 Foxconn workers $5,000 each to take the month off from tomorrow and go somewhere else. That's a $100m outlay for a vastly higher profit. It'

If I could short FB I would do so immediately. The fallout from this is going to be immense and long-term. I'd imagine they are facing two choices at FB right now: 1. Take the site down and prevent any further leaks. But accept the absol

At least you were able to see what it was in. That alone in a massive step forward. And I don't see any problem with Ruby - at least it isn't some proprietary Accenture framework.

This is a terrific idea and nicely executed. Anything that abstracts away from video discovery on Youtube is a good thing. I like to watch this sort of talk in the bath and I have to work pretty hard to avoid the 4min lightning talks, the
