Not unheard of, I know of at least one developer earning much more than this working for a bank in London. I had the pleasure of meeting another software engineer from Switzerland who's salary was around that figure.

It's a little bit of A, a little bit of B. The start of the night was very much a mingle, networking opportunity before the talks started. After the talks there was a gathering in the pub around the corner, which I'd of loved to of gone to,

It was a complete failure on my part, I had/have an inability to talk/approach groups of people and ended up sitting on my own guzzling cans of sprite before making a hasty and rather embarrassingly early exist.

Very modest of you John. I personally found your talk great, and I came away from the event with a crazy idea which I'm going to pursue. ;)

I really like this and have bookmarked it. I'll mostly be using it to demonstrate quickly to my customers how sites will look for a variety of devices in a simple way they'll understand. Any thoughts on monetization? Or are you planning on

Bit of a shameless plug but I created something very similar here. https://github.com/Alan01252/WP-Bootstrap-2.1 I used this as the base to create my current blogs theme ( can be found in my profile ). Hope this helps others who my be con

Good point! Thanks Tom. I assumed it was for one person but now you've mentioned it, that is probably for them both. In which case I guess it's less extreme on my brain.

This was my favourite Podcast so far. A few things I really took away from it ( which I'll be implementing in my own freelancing /consulting business ) in no particular order 1. Charge more..... 2. Sell yourself as someone who solves busine

Sorry, but that last line sentence has really touched a nerve, maybe I'm being trolled, but here comes my 2 cents anyway. I personally use PHP all the time, I love it. I can code large, maintainable and secure applications with far more spe

Just started using Zsh. I never really had any qualms with bash, and so had the mantra if it's not broke don't fix it. Then I worked with a couple of junior developers and noticed them doing some cool looking things on the terminal. Suffice

I've been freelancing for just over four months now and there are only two ways I've found clients ( who will pay the rates I charge ) so far. 1. Emailed the larger web design and creative agencies in the local area. ( Maximum around 1 1/2

As a freelance developer myself, and thanks to Patio11, I've always had the charge more mantra firmly placed at the front of my head. So it's a little disheartening to hear on the basis of what was said in this conversation, that I'm still

It's amazing actually how many programmers don't concentrate on marketing at all. I've recently got a few emails from fellow developers asking if they need a blog/twitter/google+ account in order to get customers as a freelancer. The answer

I'm shocked that in the last five minutes the two comments on this post so far are both from people, who, like myself, and the friend in the article, worry about sending invoices! I thought it was just something I was struggling with. It's

Care to elaborate? I don't feel like I'm billing too often (I send invoices once a month), and I'm not sure what you mean by too much?

Not US but UK here. And yes, in my experience, yes you can do 20 hour weeks from freelance jobs. The people/companies who want you are simply those companies with more work than they can currently handle. It's not hard to see why, in the UK

Thanks blu3jack. I'll be honest I'm not sure how I'll handle that when the time comes. I'm hoping that as long as I always leave the job knowing I did the best I could, even if I believe the decision made were the wrong ones, I'll be happy.

I think this is a great point. I've seen time and time again the old adage "it's not what you know, it's who you know" ringing true. It took me a long time to stop moaning about it, and start doing something about it instead.

I'm keen to know whether you ever expressed these concerns? My recent (and limited in comparison to yours) experience is that as a freelancer demanding a certain wage my knowledge and feedback is taken in very high regard and if I feel some
