Speaking of LLVM's "modular" architecture ; LLVM's architecture is so modular that projects like the Rust compiler or Emscripten use their own modified forks of the LLVM tree ... What's the point in being "modu

This is dangerous advice. The same rant could be made about named structs, overloaded operators, or virtual functions. "With these stupid named structs now I can't know the offsets of the members I'm using!" "Now I

There are simpler and less intrusive ways to solve outside-AST issues (like an automatic reformatting pass before each build or each diff) What you're suggesting raises a bunch of new (non-trivial) issues: - What would you do with code

For the actual implementation of a compiler (not design of the language itself), I'd recommend "Modern Compiler Design" by Dick Grune. A lot more practical and readable than the Dragon Book. About the language design itself,

Choices are made at the time of writing the code. And complex code has proven to be very easy to write. So the mental cost of all the existing choices must be minimal.

The OP's work shows it clearly is possible to manipulate lists in C++, in a simple and concise way.

Actually, teaching people how to avoid inefficiencies might transform "slow code" to "slow and unmaintainable code". It's more strategic to teach people to write readable code (exactly like the OP does), and then ..

Although an implementation based on streaming combinators (=no intermediate allocations) clearly is faster, the interface you provided definitely corresponds to the way I want to program. You might want to have a look to std.algorithm from
