> I don’t get this at all from the authors. My take is that they call out serious flaws in the rigor of how papers are reviewed. I don’t think it’s reasonable to extend that to say the field is worthless. I think it's rather undenia

I think it's surprising that on a site such as HN the narrative of these authors is so readily accepted without any second thought. The claim is that they just made up trash and submitted it to high-quality peer-reviewed journals and t

Other people have mentioned the new, higher-efficiency planes, but the reason they've had this much effect is that they've caused a fundamental shift in the architecture of airline routes by killing the "hub and spokes"

The most promising general reddit equivalent I've seen so far is tildes.net. It's the first time I've seen a fork of the reddit model with some actually fresh ideas. However, like all of the hundreds of alternatived, this sit

I feel like this is just a loose-loose situation that instead of encouraging and protecting small innovators from the power of established companies instead just locks them out. Patents are essentially MAD (except of course for the part whe

This isn't really a solution, though. It's just moving the problem somewhere else. The problem then becomes things such as linking existing Third Party Identifiers like email, phone numbers etc. to the users key (which most regula

I feel like the best way to do a live coding demo is to compromise on either the live or the coding part. For example, by preparing the code ahead of time, or playing a prerecorded video of instead. This convinces me that live coding is an

It's a "solved problem" in the sense that it doesn't matter for the use cases USB was designed for. Most people are using USB to connect a few devices at most and over short distances, so these effects are negledgible. B

There's already a lot of professional sound gear that uses Ethernet with a custom layer 3 (iirc) protocol for digital audio, so supporting Ethernet would sure make sense.

Well, it's basically a privilege escalation vulnerability. If you've owned some server, you now have a possibility to get access to the admins local machine too, likely giving you admin access to the whole infrastructure. If you &

I think it's pretty unfortunate that even now, CSPs are getting so little love in the comments of a post where they would have easily prevented this script from loaded at all, and could have helped the author discover the script the se

You could do this much easier and better with a Content-Security-Policy. Whitelist the things you want to allow, and set a report-uri to get notified of any CSP violations.

My opinion is that generally, implicit `this` is in many ways similar to null pointers in that it was a big design mistake that was somehow copied to to many common languages without a good reason. It adds a special case to so many things,

If you ask the PR department or look at the "About Us" section of any company, you'll find some fantastical story how they're improving humanity by earning millions doing whatever they do too.

The problem here is that often, there's not just the github repo, but also the non-namespaced language package manager, e.g. npm, pypi. You'd have to transfer that at some point. I'm also unsure how you can notify your users.
