The claim that an engineer would run this study better is baseless. Most CS faculty I know do not have the experience necessary to plan and run a well thought out randomized controlled experiment with human subjects. There is definitely som

How do you balance what is effective for closing deals versus what is sustainable for the employees? Are you tracking any satisfaction from the employees and how it changes through this process or in response to the variables in the calls?

ex. Goldman Sachs predicts Apple will have $25m sales Q2 2017 at the beginning and some variance of the stock price is based on that public prediction. If you have finer granularity like Apple is likely already at 10m only a quarter through

This is provocative and fun but doesn't hold true for me personally. If I'm working on only one project I will often end up getting blocked where banging my head against the problem doesn't lead to progress. The only reliable

Why? If you can't get significance with 237 people your effect size is likely so negligible that it's not worth studying anyway.

Great point. Exactly what the book tackles. The US did not often intervene in the past because there was no direct benefit to do so. Powers argues that this is changing. The international condemnation and uproar from citizens has political

On this topic, I highly recommend Samantha Power's book "A Problem From Hell: America and the Age of Genocide" which details the United States inability to respond promptly to the many cases of genocide over the past century.

The mechanism doesn't really matter. Perhaps these drugs simply do make people feel good and consequently they perform better. In the end it still increases their performance on these tasks.

I'm hesitant to generalize the NYT corpus to "public perception". I'd be very curious to see the regional differences within the United States in these trends.

Agreed. The post is so devoid of any context about where this would fit in a program that it's hard to tell what the author was attempting to convey. It's absolutely inappropriate as a starting point for either CS or SE.
