This pretension is exactly why there is so much animosity towards "techies" who sneer at anyone not working in a technical discipline.
- HeavenBanned 10y agoI have a useless Philosophy degree and have been floundering in the job market for 6 years. Please don't defend anything but STEM unless you're sure you'd go back in time and major in Underwater Basketweaving and stick with its unsavory economic repercussions with a smile. I am not ungrateful that I have a Philosophy degree nor do I carry myself with pretension when thinking about attaining it (and actually, I think it's a boost because I focused on AI in my philosophical research), but to think one could major in Philosophy WITHOUT a STEM to buttress its absolutely abysmal job-prospects you have to be absolutely a.) out of your mind in this modern-era great depression or b.) sufficiently confident that Daddy has a job lined up for you at the firm by the time of graduating. Otherwise, regular non-200-IQ-Wittgenstein/Plato-level BA Philosophy majors (Art majors who aren't Rembrandt, Political Science majors who aren't Chomsky, etc. etc. etc.) should not subject themselves to the continual bullshit reasoning that they can "major in anything they want and expect a decent paying job" or "are free to be anything they wanna be" -- no, you simply can't. I couldn't even hold a job at Starbucks down for more than a month, and you expect me to continue being underemployed like this without the ability to even support myself with an apartment or - heaven forbid - maybe even a home with a bachelors degree? Seriously? What kind of economy is this where owning a home might not be a prospect for a millennial until they're in their mid to late 40s and sometimes never?! I didn't ask for this. I've made comments before regarding having all public universities STEM-only. If you want to major in Juggling you can do it on private dime, not on taxpayer money. Universities need to take a long, hard look at what they're offering students who are being fooled like cows into walking into what amounts to a slaughterhouse. I'm going back for my bachelors again, after leaving university for 6 years, but this time I'm doing it _right_ (Software Engineering) and I'm not being fooled by this system that thrives off of unaware 16 year old teens who don't know how the world works and by parents who coasted off a post-war boom who thought everything was dandy and are now boomeranging instead of "Empty-Nesting".
