First of all, I was immediately turned off by this article when it cited a study from 1933 . Sure he used other evidence later, but I've come into the habit of being seriously skeptical of any scientific work done more than twenty years a

Emil, I know what your motivation is here, but I have to agree with some people commenting on the feasibility here. Sounds to me you have something like FairSoftware with a purely teen focus in mind. The problem with that demographic thou

I always enjoy reading Andrew's posts, but I didn't get much out of this one. Calling ad supported sites a B2B is just a unique way of looking at the situation--simply a different way to look at it, if you will. The fact remains that this "

Bongobing may not appeal to you, but it is a valid attempt by a student who is attempting to learn . By that standard, they deserve our honest opinion. They obviously need to be pointed in the right direction, and I don't feel that "No.

I agree, the simplicity is really the strong suit here. I would say this is at least a solid start . I first tried a search for a semi obscure product called a "grillmate". Got nothing. I then went to the opposite side of the spectrum and

It appears I'm more trusting of my Analytics data than most (could be because my site garners little traffic). The copy on the front page was clear enough for me to warrant a trial, and I felt that I knew what to expect from the very beginn

Coming up with an answer on Google is not the same as knowing the answer. Sure I can look up what a class is and give you a reasonable answer, but if I knew anything about code (I don't) I would be able to give you an instant and satisfac

I'm liking it. Its pretty clear what the site does, but I prefer more straightforward tag lines like "Send real postcards to anyone." Out of curiosity though, where does a start-up get $50,000 for a design competition? I've often consider

You're right. My original comment was made as I was just waking up that morning, and it certainly did not facilitate the conversation well. Interestingly enough, the majority of the downmods were after I edited it. The bottom line is yes, "

I completely agree that the downmod thing has gotten a bit out of hand as of late (Disclaimer: I'm the author of the first comment listed as an example). The up and down votes are not meant to be a sign of your personal support or distaste

Supposedly it is still easier to convert a free model into a paid one than vice versa. People hate seeing something they place real value on be given away to others. I would suggest keeping the core of what you have now free, and reserving

This is disgusting--plain and simple. Not only is this an obvious abuse of the judicial system, but it is a valuable insight into the real attitude of Google HQ. I'm taking my personal data elsewhere. Its been bung, Google. EDIT: I understa

I've noticed that marketing a free item as costing "$0.00" is somewhat of an emerging trend. I am all for mixing things up a little bit, but I think at this point it still makes a customer think "wait a second, are they going to charge me s

I find this post rather inspiring (who doesn't like cheering for an underdog?) Although I believe he is right to use Balsamiq as an example of great success, I'm not sure Peldi's market is exactly a small niche. Sure he has targeted a small

This is a great metaphor for the infamous chicken/egg problem. To have a dance party, you obviously need a lot of dancers. Typically, however, nobody wants to join a dance party unless its already packed full of people. Just like this party

The support that YC provides is definitely more valuable than the money they provide. With that being said, however, you can't discount the benefit of having that extra cash. $5,000 for 5% equity essentially valuates your company at $100,

Hell, maybe even something more than the box. This is a community of developers, yes. Are they all ready to jump on your idea? No. If you're serious about finding a co-founder, open up a little. Thats how I found mine.

Gaming this type of system is certainly possible, but I can identify a few factors that would limit this. For one, no matter how large "their slice of the pie" is, the publishers won't make much if the user doesn't feel that the content is
