Even though dropbox is probably simple enough to use without one, their "getting started" walkthrough is really the golden standard in my mind. Grooveshark is a little different, but whenever you access the site from a new IP, their little

...could this be the warning signs of YC news starting to become reddit ? I hate to pick at straws here, but this single phrase has been repeated across HN threads for years. No, we are not becoming reddit. Some past references: http:&#x

Well ultimately you'll be the judge of whether a market is large enough--it just depends on your goals really. As far as actually quantifying it though, there's several methods. I personally think the easiest traditional way of doing it is

I can appreciate your desire for brevity, but I do believe the OP had a larger point than just "posterous has balls". Ultimately this covers the issue of competition that many entrepreneurs constantly fret over. Many people loathe being com

I knew there were others lurking among the discussions on Erlang... :) 1.) Geo filtering is definitely going to be key for us at some point. Right now the system is designed to handle this, its just a matter of implementation really. 2.) D

This is all awesome stuff, Pete (Gotta love HN for this, getting instant feedback from someone whose work has influenced my own). The little things you pointed out are definitely on my todo list, and a demo video is in the pipelines. There

Seems like this could be a huge leap towards the unified locations database many have called for. Sure it'd be nice if it was an open sourced database, but just like with Facebook and identity, corporate control is currently far more practi

Not sure if this is what you're looking for, but a fellow HNer (hajrice) is working on questionify.com They're still in private beta but I know Emil would be more than willing to offer an account. Good luck!

This is true, we did put quite a bit of effort into properly forecasting demand. At the end of each day I'd count every piece of food we had left, feed that into some software along with some variables such as weather, and try to calculate

I worked at Panera (St.Louis Bread Co. actually) for three years back in high school, and this new store is literally down the street from me. Every one of their locations already donates a huge amount of baked goods to local charities each

True. But I've always believed when you're dealing with a C2C business, you have to choose one of the C's to attack first. On the other hand, sellers who pay to sell something that doesn't sell probably don't make great repeat customers. Pe

I really have to admire Zed's use of all things lean here. It looks like a bare-bone site with no architecture to speak of, but there seems to be just enough content to create a compelling value proposition. This is an MVP if I've ever seen

Seems like the real value is derived from the incentives system. I don't think I've ever used those common 'email a friend' links. There's two potential reasons for this: 1) I don't get any results. Not even confirmation if the person took

I could see the dropbox reciprocity tactic working here. The recommender may get a cut of revenue, but the recommended could be given a discount as well. This could turn companies off from the CPC model though.

My guess is that they were trying to skim off as much revenue from the potential customer pool as possible. If you charge $49 and only get 100 takers, you still make more than if you had 1000 paying $1.99. I know there's different threshold
