I prefer not being on social media, it's amazing. Where to jump back in honestly depends on your target audience. For niche tech stuff, HN seems to be fine. I can't recommend reddit. I got an account a few months ago, and nearly e

We would only need a committee's approval if changing it would break things. I say we skip that process, test it in a lab somewhere in rural midwest where nobody lives, and see if gravity starts changing or whatever. As long as cows do

I never knew WebGL or OpenGL, my first experience was learning WebGPU, because I planned to use it for the drawing of 90s.dev which is meant to be future-first. But WebGPU is just not there yet. And from what I read about it, it looks like

I still don't really understand them. The last time I used them was for a client probably in 2016 or 2018, and I forgot everything I learned about them. But they have an RFC so that's pretty cool.

> It’s often said that one sign of a standard having succeeded is that it’s used for things that the inventors never imagined. It's certainly a sign of something's utility and versatility, for sure. Congrats.

I agree. I actually named my submission "Finally releasing 90s.dev" but the HN mods changed it to the current "Show HN: ..." title. They based it on the second section of my blog, which I changed to "New game making

Wow, this is an incredibly full featured Win10-like OS using plain HTML, with apps like Quake3 and Tic80 built in. Besides having something you can continuously work on, what's the current concrete end goal for it for users?

These points summarize the principles behind 90s.dev which I've been following for years and still stand by. Especially this: don't be afraid to try to innovate, to get a new answer to an old question, to start over from first pri

Maybe I'm just old and tired, but this pun is exactly like what you'd find in a movie review, which is literally the worst type of literature for that exact reason, and should be banned worldwide.

The one thing I miss about dired-x is being able to edit multiple filenames simultaneously in the same way you do edit a file using multiple cursors, and commit the changes all at once. Can someone make that work in Windows Explorer or VS C

You're mixing up ideas. Microsoft isn't "sincere" because it's just a business doing what businesses do, making money. They're not trying to be altruistic or principled. They're just doing business. But I

Microsoft seems to be going all in on open source over the past 10-15 years. From a consumer perspective, we're almost all benefiting. From a business perspective, they get unpaid help and community brownie points.

The semantics are very different. It's much closer to a mathematical proof than a C program with different syntax, in terms of its lazy evaluation.

I honestly just skimmed the code and assumed it probably does what I would guess it does. It seemed to make sense and be straightforward... assuming my guesses were right, I guess?

For one thing, it's hard to know what to spend it on. What should take priority? Obviously your own basic needs, for starters. And then of course the needs of your immediate dependents. But then what? Do you try to increase your qualit

I tried jsdoc for so many years before just giving up and going full TypeScript. But you're right, the TS layer would be static, and you would compile to JS and just use that... I guess. Until the types-proposal is inevitably implement

I think so, but that was the 90s where we needed a lot more hindsight to get it right. Plus that was mostly just Sun, right? WASM is backed by all browsers and it looks like MS might be looking at bridging it with its own kernel or somethin

It seems to me like all languages are converging towards something like WASM. I wonder if in 20 years we will see WASM become the de facto platform that all apps can compile to and all operating systems can run near-natively with only a thi
