It's a terrible way to learn. The example of context based words mentioned just doesn't work: "For example, a child who says "horse" when the word was "house" is probably relying too much on visual, or gra

Yes, I am personally disgusted that installing Office FORCES a word processor and spreadsheet to be installed when all I wanted was WMF clip art!

Yes it seems so! But it's different to the browser wars because the browsers used to used sensible amounts of RAM, and these "modern" chat systems seem to like ballooning quantities of RAM for displaying text and pictures, eg

Haha it's insane why it would need so much RAM for chat. It's truly insane.

Thanks, an interesting paper. I wrote a word-wrapping algorithm once so this will be a good read to see how bad mine was.

I did work in a place like that, and it turns out that hastily writing lots of code to do something yesterday whilst under stress just resulted in a constant turnover of staff, with nobody knowing how any of the millions (literal millions)

This is true. It is less pain for you in the long run to be free of people who believe magic occurs in nanoseconds overnight.

Ugh but where does it end? I dig out my "The Dilbert Principle" book and will start reading it again to promote sanity.

Thanks. If only this was available for C++ toolkits or C# WinForms, I'd use it in a heartbeat.

Yes, I ensure that my outgoings are low. I have a mortgage to pay (it isn't a luxurious area, so the house prices aren't astronomical) but before moving to 3 days I ensured that I cleared debts on cars/credit cards (eg. do yo

I wondered this too. It's not like there's a part of a language you MUST use. Perhaps they are fearful that it'll grow and grow and add features in that will make it difficult to learn and unwieldy. Stroustrup always said tha

Learn CMD+shift+N and your life will be complete. In Explorer, just learn Ctrl-Shift-N. And alt-up to go to the directory above (cmd-up for Mac). Honestly, using the keyboard for both applications removes a lot of the pain.

Looks very simple to write, although as others have said why not use a GUI to build the UI, eg. wxFormBuilder which has outputs to Python/PHP/C++ ? Thought I'd mention that as it might be something useful to others.

This drag & drop behaviour is still perfectly viable in WinForms eg. using C#. Never quite a polished as Borland's offering of yesteryear (the GUI editor always felt clunky) but it's perfectly do-able.

Not sure I agree that a computer without touch is broken, since I have managed to use one for 30+ years without a touchscreen. I assume this what made him develop the Windows 8 with the appalling touch Start menu, which everybody hated.

Isn't this the problem with iOS apps too? They can't share libs or .so between them, which is why each iOS app is colossal for no good reason, eg. Google Sheets 180MB alone, Google Docs also 180MB, YouTube 280MB..... insane sizes

Have you ever read Windows Internals? Or MSDN? It has more documentation than any Linux system, ever. Even Microsoft's documentation of Apple's SDKs is better than Apple's. Windows Internals books are extremely extremely deta
